Given the fantastic sales since the IP was purchased and merch, MS may have already made the money back or getting there.

Beach please, show me the numbers if you want to talk the talk :D

Last time I checked Minecraft is still selling and the PC version is at 25 million sold and counting.

Yes, except 24 million of those copies were sold before MS

Perhaps you should first show us the numbers in regards to how the above conclusion was arrived at :D

MS indeed shot themselves in the foot. They own a mega popular IP that sells great on every platform its on, even the side game sold well.

Given the fantastic sales since the IP was purchased and merch, MS may have already made the money back or getting there.

If they got a sequel to be produced, it could be a console seller.

Maybe, but I think its in MS's best interest to keep it multiplat where its massively profitable.

The money Minecraft brings in could pay for other games that sell consoles.

I'm making an assumption based on how well the series has sold and the abundant merch. MS has owned it for years and its been mega popular for years.

Bottomline, I can't imagine there are regrets about the money spent.

why bother quoting back numbers someone made up. real numbers are at purchase PC numbers were at about 15 million. Total sales across all platforms were at about 55 million. PC is now 25 million and last year total sales for all platforms passed 100 million. It has turned out to be a cheap purchase, must admit I thought at the time it was overpriced but willing to admit I was dead wrong there.

Thats the whole point. These are made up numbers and as such it invalidates from the outset the poster's authority to seek numbers from another poster in an effort to downplay the other point of view, especially when the original poster's argument is not based on anything except pure perception and uninformed observation..Guess I am being too picky with stuff here as you might be suggesting :)

When MS bought Minecraft I was thinking what they were thinking, Minecraft was already past its prime, there was no way MS were going to get their money back. Almost anyone who had wanted had already bought and played it and youtubers and twitchers had already dropped it. But quick google search doesnt say anything about MS losses. It's like who cares, what is a few billion of dollars here or there for MS? And Minecraft is not the kind of game that you can make a sequel for, it would be like sequel to tetris, you can release it but it will be just another one of millions of versions of the original.

Minecraft will get side games/ content over time. Not only this, but it can be used to leverage xbox/windows 10 pc. Microsoft always responds to the market and what the market wants. That is why they're rich.

The market has been demanding exclusive games and MS has been ignoring them.

To be fair here STAGE, its all a matter a taste. My taste isnt in the Sony camp either and majority of there games are bland just like MS games. MS have been releasing new IP games all the time just like Sony. There probably over shadowed because of the popularity of the console itself.

Halo Wars 2 just came out with Sea of Thieves, Crack Down 3, State of Decay, Cup Head and more due this year. If there good is debatable. Are they Xbox games yes. They dont need a new name to it to be good.

I could argu that Sony lacks a major FPS franchise. As a FPS fan like myself i find that unattractive. No console is perfect. XB house the best FPS/Racing franchise out if the 3. Nintendo house the best Platformer and Sony house the best 3rd person shooter.

Its a matter a choice. MS release enough games as needed. Sony might release more however more doesn't always lead to better. Black Tiger is proof of that.

My taste is in both camps. Ive never not owned a Microsoft console. if anything is lacking its my Nintendo hardware. Its not about taste, but rather the fact that Microsoft does not develop on par with their competition. The best new IP they had this generation were both third party in Sunset Overdrive and Titanfall. Microsoft has paid to disguise their shortcomings. I'm cool with Halo and Gears as well, trust me. After last gen even the media started to notice Microsofts shortcomings as Sonys exclusives started to overwhelm them. They had more new IP's created than both Nintendo and Microsoft as gamestop posted in 2011. This is why this generation Phil Spencer said it is a big deal for them to focus on hot new IP's. If thats the case then the havent put one foot forward yet. Hopefully we are surprised at E3. I like almost all genres, so there is not really any console that I am not attracted to if the content is there.

At this point its beyond Sony to even focus on the FPS genre. It was a disservice to Sonys creative efforts to keep Killzone going. As good as the franchise was it was never great. No matter how great it was it was never top tier by even Sonys standards and thats why what Microsoft has to offer now isnt even considerable as a threat. State of decay is the only game I can consider since I hear about it so much, but yet so little from the mainstream and the same goes for Crackdown. Crackdown is no threat to anyone, including third party predecessors that paved the way for it. If Microsoft can give Crackdown the push it deserves, perhaps even I could be hyped about it and I love the open world sand box genre. When Crackdown dropped last gen no one spoke about it in a reverent fashion so lets hope theyve made an effort to make it relevant. Sonys top FPS team just created a genre defining game in a genre Sony has long since mastered and are now branching it out into open world RPG's. Most of Sony's gamers enjoy massive amounts of games from both the west and the east and thats what Sony does better than their competition. Where Nintendo and Microsoft both lack, sony has something to offer.

LOL Why did you even reply to these people man? They know MS does not compare to Sony when it comes to first party. That's a fact the whole world knows, even Phil Spencer and he always praises Sony's offerings. That argument is one sided as Sony has more critically acclaimed games in history than MS and sold more games since Xbox entered the industry. Gamers choose Sony and that is a fact. Of course Xvox fans would deny reality. Horizon is a landmark in gaming and that game is better than Mzs entire catalog including what the got from Rare. Far better than any generic shooting game or Gran Turismo clone. They are just sour because Halo Wars 2 is the best they will get.
