Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo Switch Can't Connect to Internet Authentication-Required WiFi (Update: Day 1 update adds feature)

Update: Feature will be available with the day one update for the console

While our hands-on preview of Nintendo Switch’s user interface and operating system was mostly positive, one predictable negative aspect reared its ugly head. Gamers who pick up Nintendo’s fledgling home console will not be able to access WiFi routers that require internet authentication.

Although this won’t be a problem for many gamers looking to keep their Nintendo Switch at home, many WiFi routers at cafe’s, restaurants, hotels, and even apartment complexs require the user to accept terms and conditions in an Internet browser. Because Nintendo Switch has no Internet browser, there is no way for the Nintendo Switch to currently access the WiFi routers.

The lack of an internet browser caused a mini-uproar in the Nintendo Switch communities when it was first announced, with people debating the usefulness of the feature. This isn’t to say that Nintendo will not be getting these features — realistically it is likely a short-term launch problem, much like Switch’s lack of multimedia options.

Also in the realm of possibility, Nintendo may have an alternative solution to this problem coming in the Nintendo Switch’s Day One update. However, little is known yet about what the Day One update will actually entail besides online functions and Micro SD card support, so any guesses beyond that is pure conjecture.

Nintendo Switch launches worldwide. on March 3, 2017. Check out DualShockers unboxing video, where we inspect everything you will be able to find in the hardware’s box on Day 1.

That's a pretty big downside honestly. Nintendo has basically designed it so you can't use any online features as a portable. No 4G, no wifi hotspots that require authentication.

Hopefully they get the Wifi Hotspot thing fixed right away.

Okey, that's actually an issue. Never think about that tbh XD. It should be solved quickly.

This sucks. What are you doing, Nintendo?

Yea I mentioned this concern previously in that "lack of a web browser at launch" thread. Hopefully there will be a web browser soon enough post launch otherwise, this will be a pretty big inconvenience when going to many public places.

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

Luckily this can change at any point but Nintendo need an army to get this thing up to scratch on the apps/software side of things. Awfully disappointing considering the console is literally a tablet.

But they will need Wifi to download the update.

So people will have to go track down compatible wifi to update their switch. Hoping that the switch will give them a way to connect to WIfi.

I'm glad I don't live in my last apartment. This would be a freaking nightmare.

Sigh, your at home Wifi is perfectly fine, this is about the free wifis usually found in the outdoor world, aka free Wifi usually found at cafes, hotel, airline, universities.

Really seems that this console is barely ready in terms of features and solving these kinds of problems, there is this too
