Forums - Gaming Discussion - Switch battery life: 2h 48m when playing Zelda

Yes, there are outlets, but that makes the device no longer portable.  It turns into a device that tethers you to a wall.  Checkout this link and scroll down to the shot of the Switch and WiiU thickness comparisons:

The solution also lies in convincing companies (in this case Nintendo) that device thinness shouldn't be prioritized over battery life.  Functionality vs aesthetics.

I don't agree. Would you tell someone charging their phone in a public outlet that their phone isn't portable? Obviously it is. They're just taking AC power while it's avaialble to preserve it for later.

Sitting next to a wall and gaming is a bit much maybe, but having a USBC cord plugged into a chair outlet or a table top outlet in an airport doesn't change the experience. Yes, you're plugged in, but you're sitting where you would be anyway.

Too me, making the Switch as bulky as the GamePad would hamper portability from my perspective. The Switch being thin (and uniformly thin) makes it reasonable to throw into a sleeve and stuff into my backpack. Space is at a premium when I pack for trips. The Switch easily makes the cut for something to put in my onboard personal item whereas the GamePad would not.

This is kinda bad... i mean, if you just look at the "3h whit Zelda" thing you will most likely be on the "ok boat" since 3 hours is acceptable, but there's a big problem here...

Battery Life... This switch here is in top condition and is getting less than 3 hours! Damn, it will not take long before the thing starts to fall to under 2h30m, or even 2h in some cases of extreme usage. Forget the power, what this thing needs is better battery.

An issue going forward, is when games on the Switch become more technically impressive the battery will be even worse.

How will an online monster run? If it is less then 2 hours then good luck selling copies in Japan.

Nailed it.

The Switch isn't flawless but people are complaining about things that are standard at this point. Costs in the range of a Vita/3DS at launch, has similar battery life to PSP/3DS, is near the size of other mobile devices, etc. But suddenly these things are unacceptable.

PSP's battery was removable, that was not the standard.  You had the choice of buying higher captacity batteries or can switch out one if you have a spare.

Wait. What wasn't the standard? Removable/replaceable batteries or the fact that PSP had a 3 hour battery life out of the box when it released?

Switch battery life is in the same ball park as the 3DS. In 5 years, I've never had an issue with running out of battery on the 3DS. It's gotten me through dozens of flights of various length and many other "on the go" situations.

According to a Nielsen survey, gamers spend about 12% of their leisure time playing video games. That's games of all types. Home console, computer, portable, mobile, etc.

What leisure means is different for everyone, but I think it's conservative to say that after work and/or school and sleep, a particularly not-busy person might have 80 hours of leisure time a week. The math works out to under 1.5 hours of gaming per day. More than an hour under the Switch's lower end target.

I know I probably sound like a fanboy, but I'm really struggling to imagine a scenario in which 2.5 hours of battery is an issue on the go when even playing 2.5 hours of games in a day is so uncommon.

2.5 hours, dear lord. On a launch-game, that's a port. I remember when I could play my GameBoy for weeks, weeks, on a couple of batteries. It's bad nowadays, but the worst thing is, we're fine with it. Makes me wonder how low it can go before people don't find it acceptable anymore.

Do people even play games anymore lol, I spent most of my time looking at the OS and the battery should last at least 6 hours doing that lol

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

Enough for me. I need only 2 hours to go by train for work. My smartphone battery lasts only 90 min when I'm playing games.

My Yotaphone 2 phone has slightly faster gpu and about 50% faster cpu over Switch with a 1080p OLED display and when playing intensive games I only get about 90 minutes. I have to use an external battery pack which can increase the runtime by about 10x to the point of not worrying about battery life. The battery pack has 20,000mAh approx. So there are worse devices for runtime out there and like the Switch the solution is simple. My phone will play mp3's for upto 90hrs though and does have some great power saving feature especially it's e-ink display but when playing intensive android games with all four cpu's peaking at 2.2ghz and the gpu delivering over 150 gflops of performance thermal issues can cause slow down at times.

Weeks? lol

Gameboy pocket was like 8-10 hours playing Pokemon, and after that you had to pay more to play, you are basically saying things were better when you had to go at the store and pay more money every few days to keep playing instead of charging it every 2.5 -6.5 hour in any plug...
