The Version Of Skyrim For Nintendo Switch Is Still Unknown

Will it be the Special Edition or something else? Todd Howard says he "can't say."

One of the biggest-name third-party games confirmed for the Nintendo Switch this year is Bethesda's acclaimed open-world RPG, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. But is Nintendo's new console getting 2016's Special Edition or some other form of the game?

Unfortunately, we don't know yet. Skyrim director Todd Howard told Polygon (via IGN) that he "can't say" anything about this, at least not yet.

The version of Skyrim for Switch could be a port of the 2011 original, the remastered 2016 Special Edition, or possibly some other form of the game built for Nintendo's system.

The Skyrim Special Edition comes with all of the game's DLC and support for mods, as well as increased resolution and other effects. A Switch demo reel showed Skyrim on the console, but this might not have been gameplay. We'll report back with more details as they become available.

"We love to make games and worlds for you to get lost in, that you can make your own, and never want to put down. Now you don't have to--now you can play Skyrim wherever you want," Howard said during January's Switch event.

Skyrim's Special Edition is available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

Howard told GameSpot this month that Nintendo was "less interested" in Bethesda's games before the Switch. And like many other developers, Howard isn't completely sure if the Switch will be a hit. "I don't know where it's gonna go," he said. "But I think it's a really smart platform. We like it a lot."

The Switch launches on March 3. You can see a list of all the launch titles here and every game confirmed for the system here.

This is so weird to say. First they weren't certain if the release the game on the switch, at all. But scenes from the remastered version were shown in the reveal trailer of the switch. Later they announce that they indeed are releasing skyrim on the switch and show more scenes from the remastered version. Now they are uncertain of which version it will be. Well, you can keep the original version. I don't think many will buy it.

Not a launch game, but it's obvious that they would have said it already if it was simply the special edition.

It's more likely something else, maybe between the original and the special edition.

It's probably based on the special edition code/engine but missing features due to the Switch performance level and fitting on cartridge, so its somewhere between the 2 versions. So it may not be easy to identify as one or the other.

Maybe they are developing something different of new for it... so they don´t want to say and keep it secret....

Anyway... I don´t think most people are excited about Skyrim on Switch. And to me, it feels like they´re doing that so they can learn how to work with the system, much like some other companies did with their launch titles for the WiiU

Would be cool if they add some extra's. You already have the notch pickaxe in game but a Link shield/Sword could work :).

I came here to say this, only to be pleasantly surprised at someone having said it already. It would simply make no sense at all for Bethesda to use the old version since the new one is so much better and it can probably be toned down quite easily so it runs on Switch.

There may be some truth this this.  I remember reading that Bethesda had no intentions of bringing a remastered version to both the 4 and One.  But it had something to do with Fallout 4's devleopment cycle that made it easy to do so.

I figure its special edition while docked, 360 version on the go.

Also I figure they want to name it something different for marketing reasons.

Additionally, I think some kind of Nintendo-curated DLC similar to the Super Mario Mashup pack for Minecraft WiiU is in the works here.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016
