Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo Switch will allow local network updates

UPDATE: We found out something pretty interesting about Switch while messing around with the system this week. Although it apparently won’t be available at launch, Nintendo is planning a feature so that update data can be exchanged with local users. That means you won’t necessarily have to connect online to get an update – you can just obtain the data from a friend.

Switch also appears to have connectivity with My Nintendo at the system level. We weren’t really able to try this out since a day one update is required, but it seems like you might be able to earn points with physical titles. Wii U and 3DS games already offer this, but only with the digital versions. We have a physical copy of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on Switch yet there is an option to “Earn Points”.

I got to fortunately play with the Nintendo Switch and after looking through the home menu and selecting the options for the game I was playing (The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild), there was a menu option to choose Update Game.

The first option in the sub menu was your typical Update the Game via Internet Connection but the second option was Update the Game via Local Friend. (This is not verbatim but to that effect). And that second option had a little caption underneath mentioning that this feature would be available in a future update.

This is a very cool idea Nintendo came up with. It allows you to eventually be able to take Game Updates from your Friends who have downloaded the update without you yourself downloading from the internet. I can imagine the use case would be for games like Splatoon 2 or Mario Kart 8: Deluxe. If one of your friends has an update to the game and the rest of you haven't downloaded it yet, you can all just update your game from that friend locally especially if the game requires that you all be on the same version to play local multiplayer.

I haven't seen anyone else in the mainstream media cover this interesting option so I thought I'd share my experience with the Switch with everyone.

I love this.

Source has zero proof, this is a rumour and should be marked as such.

If true... That's really cool.

Its a little nice addition if true.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

It's a weird thing to make up, so I didn't think about it, but I agree *added to title*

Via access network or wifi direct?

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Sure, those 3 people a day who run into this scenario would've killed the servers.

That's actually a pretty neat little feature

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

Would be nice if true. Couldn't play Smash Bros 3DS with friends sometimes because someone hadn't updated their game
