Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Phil Spencer: this is Xbox's best generation so far

I agree with Ka-pi96 a bit about the 7th gen having some superiority to the 8th gen (I'm working on an article about it, but not sure if I'll ever finish it), namely in original IPs. That said, in terms of a console offering, I find the Xbox One superior to the 360 in virtually every way. The controller is better, there's more power under the hood, its features and capabilities are more plentiful, and game selection is solid, especially with 360 backwards compatibility. I'm still hoping for some more improvements/features, and games, but I don't see how the 360 is superior as a console.  You could argue it had a better game lineup (I'd make that same argument with PS4), but that's subjective, and subject to change in time.

No current gen consoles touch the 360 yet. But overall its been a good and interesting gen for Xbox. Definitely amazing to see the turnaround and subsequent comeback of the Xbox One.

His reply:

Do you agree?

I would agree.  The XBox One is outselling the Xbox 360.  The XBox One is also doing better in terms of total market share.

Measured strictly against the PS4, it's obviously not doing as well.  But Microsoft's financial results are driven by sales of Microsoft products.

How do you know? What, because MS says so, that's if they have that is.

Debatable to say the least.

Worst joke of the year goes to Phil Spencer!

Maybe he means sales wise it is the best, because in the exclusives department, it is one of the worst lineups I've ever seen.

Obviously that's what he means.

Well sales wise, it's outselling the xb, and xb360 aligned sales in the hardware category, and when we include digital software its also outselling the other xboxes, and there are more Xbox Live Users than ever before so he's right in regard. As for game id say it slightly edges out the x360 and theXB when it comes to MS exclusives but that's subjective.

The XB1 is definitely ahead of the 360 launch aligned in the US. Worldwide, it most likely has fallen behind already. Xbox Wire didn't disclose the XB1 being ahead of the 360 after the 2016 holiday season whereas it did after the 2015 holiday season.

I've been thinking about the original IP thing a bit myself.  It seems like Gen 7 was much better for the introduction of new IPs.  I wasn't sure if that was real, or if I just wasn't aware of some of the new gen 8 IPs.

I think it is a legit deficiency, but I wonder if I'm glossing over some stuff as well.  Even if I don't love them all, we had the introduction of series such as Assassin's Creed, Gears of War, Uncharted, Crackdown, The Last of Us, and I'm sure plenty more.  Also, some older IPs were revitalized and effectively made new again.  It seems this generation has moreso tried to ride the momentum of those series; though there have been some very good new IPs, something feels off.  It seems like the pace of new, quality IPs isn't as good as it was in the 7th gen; at the very least, it hasn't surpassed the pace of the 7th gen.   Most of the best games to play on any of the modern 3 consoles are sequels or remasters of older IPs in my opinion.  Switch seems to be poised to have the same problem, which is very concerning because they don't have nearly the library from their previous generation as Xbox and Playstation did/do, primarily because of the lack of 3rd party support; though obviously Nintendo itself has an incredible history to draw from to provide quality entertainment, particularly via a well executed Virtual Console.

He's right.

Red Ring of Death was worse than the XO reveal.

Also, why would he reply to a guy like that. He seemed incredibly opinionated and full of himself.
