Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Files sizes of various launch window Nintendo Switch games!

Everyone keeps comparing these sizes to the PS4/One only as proof. Like the Switch is so far behind the PS4/One in graphics/textures/resolution/ect that its on duh the sizes are 4x as large, or in 3D World like 20x larger.

But just copmare to PS3/360 games then. PS3/360 games were no where near the 1.7gb size that 3D world pulled out. Or other games people have listed in this thread. And 3D World, Mario Kart 8, Pikmin 3, ect all are top of the line graphical games in concordance with the ps3/360 era of games.

But say what you want about compression, the thing to be excited about is Zelda's size. It's astronomical compared to prior entries. So unless Nintendo randomly decided to get sloppy in their file sizes, this game will be huge compared to any zelda game before. Yes, there is voice acting to some degree and the better hd audio track on switch's environments, but I doubt the audio is whats bringing it up like 5-10x larger size.

3D World and most Nintendo games use a more stylized cartoonish look. Even for PS360 standards, going for a realistic look like Uncharted 3 or Gears 3 demands higher quality assets, specifically way better textures. Those Wii U games pack better lightning effects due to the improved hardware, but those won't demand a significant increase in asset size.

And big PS360 games achieved impressive feats. God of War 3 is considerably more advanced than 3D World, it's reasonable that it's also bigger.

Anyway, the original point is that saying that Nintendo is full of compression genious is ridiculous. The evidences we have actually point that their studios had to up their capacities significantly to deal with HD development, something that most western developers mastered since 2009.

Nobody gets sloppy with compression, it's kinda basic and you have a lot of 3rd party solutions for videos and stuff. People are saying like this is some magic. If any company in the world managed to compress stuff 4X better than the rest of the world, nobody would waste it by making videogames smaller, they would get rich selling it to Google and Facebook.

BotW got bigger because it packs more audio and higher quality assets. The map is also bigger than previous games, so it also increases it.

Seems like DQH 1+2 is maxing out the currently available 32gb cart. No wonder they had to go low poly for some of the environments.

64GB carts are going to have to become a thing if Ninty wants many 3rd party AAAs.

Same reason Dragon Quest is 32GB. Developers other than Nintendo just don't know how to compress their games well enough.

For reference, Super Mario 3D World is 1.7GB.

smh... the sad thing is that you honestly believe the reason other games are big is because other developers can't compress their games.

Breath of the Wild is so small. How can this be a huge open world game? Also, some of the other games are as small as PS1 games. Quite disappointed.

Skyrim (original) was under 7GB skyrim remastered is almost 28GB. the size of your world has very little to do with the data siize of a game. All you have to do to keep things small is recycle a lot of asstes, use lower quality audio files, very and make sure everything is rendered in realtime and not pre recorded in engine cutscenes that take up a chunk of space too.

I think some of you don't really get what contributes to the data size of a game. Or what it being big/small could mean. Ah well....

Also, the size of the textures counts. Big textures can take a lot of space if there are enough of them. hence why graphic patches on PC are often huge and consume a lot of VRAM, too.

I'm getting a 64gb card and sticking to physical when I can. With Indie games sometimes weighing in well over a gig each, I want enough room for games that don't see a retail release.

I'm drawing the line at 3GB, though. If it's a 10-Gig digital-only (i.e. Fatal Frame for Wii U) it'll be a big fat pass for me.

More polygons cost basically no space at all, only calculating power. It's the textures on them which costs the space, and those seem untouched at first glance.

That's true. Particle and lighting effects seem to be scaled back on the last build, though.

The newest footage looks TERRIBLE! Seems to be running at like 240p....

Textures can compress really well though. Even if the compression algorithm is lossless.

Yea, simple. I think you can get a 200gb card for like $60 right now. I'll be getting a card sometime this year. No rush. the 26gb or whatever the actual space is, will last me for a bit. No need to take on another $60 to my $400 day 1. Spread out the costs a bit.

But barring many DQ1-2 games filling 32 gb, a 128gb card will last most of the gen, imo, without even deleting.

But it's basically the same upgrade size/price as any PS4/One. You are paying like $50 for an extra 500gb on those systems. And those 200gb on a Nintendo system go a lot further than an extra 500gb on the other systems.

Once the Switch is set up you are left with 25.9GB of space left. the only games I'm hyped for are Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8 DX, which will probably take up 10GB together.

Yea, it's nice seeing that games are still so small on Nintendo devices. My 32gb card on my 3DS still has plenty of space and while I wasn't completely digital, I still have a few pokemon games, mario games, all teh fire emblem games, smash, bunch of vc, animal crossing, shin megaimi, ect. And still have a lto fo space.

Yes 32gb won't last as long on swtich, but a quick $50 for a micro sd card will do massive.

If I ever run out of space, I'll just expand it with my mobile's 128GB card.
