Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Files sizes of various launch window Nintendo Switch games!

Nintendo games don't have much high resolution textures and other assets are usually kept to a minimum compared to games like GTA V, The Witcher 3, or Uncharted 4. They also don't make use of voice acting as much (if at all, in certain cases), so there aren't much lossless audio files in their games, nor do they make extensive use of pre-rendered videos.

Using tons of prerendered video is a massive waste of space in this day and age, now that realtime graphics are more than good enough.

Uncompressed audio/assets is also pretty wasteful as 99% of people wouldn't even notice a bit of mild good quality compression.

I'm pretty sure most AAA current gen games could be considerably reduced in size without significant detriment if the devs could be bothered.

They could always lower quality of everything (textures, sound files, video quality, etc...), sure. But most of those devs aren't making games for Nintendo consoles.  =P

Seriously though, if you don't care about those things, that doesn't mean others don't or shouldn't. A lof of gamers play their games hooked to a surround sound system or using a good headset. But people should also keep in mind the fact that most games now support multiple languages. Those 3-5 languages take a lot of space, regarless of the sound quality. It's not like Nintendo's games where only a few select moments are voice acted. Some of these games are completely voice acted, from important cut-scenes to any NPC dialogues. And then you have GTA V, which has a lot of radio tracks and other similar immersion sound bits.

I like sc94597's idea of a compressed and an uncompressed version, so that those who have the luxury of space can get a "premium" version while those who are more frugal or less fortunate can save space.

The file size of Zelda BotW is surprising considering that Xenoblade Chronicles X on Wii U clocks in at just under 23GB, nearly twice the size.  Even Super Smash Bros U is larger, clocking in at almost 16GB.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

I wonder what's taking up the space in Dirt Rally. I just downloaded the VR version, 42 GB. It's not a looker, doesn't have cut scenes, only 7 locations, not that many cars, repetitive landscape textures, must be the audio? Does Breath of the wild have audio? :)

Nope. Gotta make the sound effects yourself. By playing while you mow your lawn, you can replace audio with HD audio. Now we can cut grass like never before

This is actually a simple fix. Release the audio for each language in optional language packs (which you can choose as many or as few as you wish.) If I only speak English, and only want to have English audio, why the hell do I need German, French, Spanish, Polish, Russian, Japanese, etc in my installation? This is why there is so much demand for repacks on PC.

The amount of work this requires amounts to an installation menu that can be designed in a few hours, and checked for security bugs within a week or so. Games are already mandatory installs these days anyway, so I don't see why every developers doesn't do this.

Here's your difference:
PS4/Xbox can handle high res textures being used extensively, switch can't.

They shoulda made their own cards,

Um, research more please. The SD card is required for games that are larger than the maximum proprietary cartridge.

Breath of the Wild is so small. How can this be a huge open world game? Also, some of the other games are as small as PS1 games. Quite disappointed.

Like most Nintendo games, simple textures and sparse dialogue (the bulk of other games' size, along with prerecorded video in some cases). Compare it to XCX. Also, the vast majority of PS1 games were well under 1GB.
