Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Will Breath of the Wild finally dethrone Ocarina of Time for people? Let's look at the facts

No you didnt, and "as everyone else is pointing out concrete situational factors", you mean someone like Muzek who played almost 15 years after launch of OoT and who don't realise that every game age!? :D

Text popping up is flaw!? First time hear about that someone consider that for flaw, that definatly wasnt flaw in 98", OoT had great sound for 98", jumping mehanic, camera were actualy all great for 98". Offcourse that backtracking isnt on pair with SS, in SS you need to back 3x time in each of region, story was also great for 98", pacing also. You do realise that none of those things you mentioned are not flaws in 98" and 1st generation of 3D games, and actually were all done great and actually better than in other games from that time!? Nobady complained about any of those things in 98" you can read any Zelda rewiew from 98".

I gave you clear examaples in comparison with other 3D games, but you ingored all that and said that "TP has better pacing than OoT", wich doent make any sense.

Again its has nothing with nostalgia, I am in gaming from 3. gen, I had almost all Sega, Sony and Nintendo consoles, Zelda OoT isnt my 1st or last Zelda that I played, so it doesnt has anuthing with nostalgia.

You keep ignoring clear facts and you have nothing to backup your claims that OoT gets so much praise only beause "its 1st 3D Zelda" or that "any 3D Zelda would have same effect", so I dont have any intention to spend any of my time on arguing with you.

Someone like him playing it years after highlights how the game is not perfect like you're trying to claim as he's not looking back at the game with rose tinted specs like yourself, my stance is further backed by someone else who said OOT's standing is due to the being nothing like it at the time mean while your only response is a nostalgia trip.

Yes text popping up every few minutes in some cases when you're trying to play is a flaw much like it was with Fi in SS if you think that's the first time anyone complains about things like that you have your head in the sand, no OOT had a great soundtrack but midis weren't great sound for 98 neither was the erratic jumping mechanic while the camera was only manageable especially compared to some other games while back tracking is on par with SS as you moan about revisiting an area 3 times in SS in OOT you do the same in a few area, you don't even remember what 1st generation 3D games were like for most part.

You didn't give me clear examples you gave me a nostalgic opinion and yes TP did have better pacing as the story continuously has you going places OOT's pacing was inconsistent. You're not giving any facts you're giving me your nostalgia trip and I'll keep highlighting it you finally get it.

Around the Network

Ocarina of Time took its "throne" during a time when gaming was still in its enfancy. When a lot of new kinds of mechanics were still figured out. It managed to take that seat because it was the first of its kind do to this so well on that scale.

But my take is that Wind Waker and Twilight Princess are better games than Ocarina of Time, because they control better and play better while using the same kind of game design. The rest is standard Zelda tropes that have been pretty much the same since the first game. The only thing I think Ocarina of Time still did better than most other Zelda games that followed is the story, but that's because I'm a sucker for time travel tales. That being said, Skyward Sword does give it a challenge.

Ocarina of Time may have been groundbreaking when it first came out, during a time when not every types of game had been attempted in 3D. These days, such things aren't going to happen on that kind of scale. That being said, Ocarina of Time has aged rather poorly from a game mechanics point of view. Sure, it introduced some that have now been adopted in one way or another by other games. But these have been polished and improved quite a bit over the course of the last two decades. The game's worst offender when compared to the games that came after it are the controls. They just ruin the game for me. They had that effect back then on the N64, they had that effect on the 3DS version, and the same applies to any other version I played. It may deserve its place in gaming's hall of fame, but to say it is still the uncontested best by today's standards is utterly ludicrous. Much better games have come out since then, some of them in the Zelda franchise itself.

Also, an endless amount of this:

Oot came out in a time when what it was doing was novel. People forget that review scores are a reflection of the time period and not a basis for all time.

When you talk which Zelda game was better, you need to think if for instance Zelda OoT was better game in 98" than TP is 2006", answer will be obvious. When OoT was out back in 98" it was almost perfect game without almost any flaws for that time (for instance OoT controls were great in 98" and actually much better than for majority games of that generation), it was great game all around, you cant say that for any 3D Zelda game after OoT, because everyone had some part of game that was weaker. That it combination with fact that was groundbreaking are reasons why is highest rating game in history.

Ocarina of Time like every other game also age, but didn't aged poorly, it actually very good game even for today standards with its game mechanic, and 3DS version proves that, OoT 3D received score of 95.

Thats a main point if you want to talk about best Zelda game or best game owereal, there is no much sense to compare game from 98" and game from 2017" because every game age and of course buy time newer games will have better graphics, or better story, or better controls, or better mechanics...so thats pointels, it has much more sense to compare in way is it for instance Zelda BotW better game in 2017. than OoT was in 98"!? But you can't really gave most accurate answer if actually you didn't played OoT back then around 98".

I was there day one in 1998, and yes the game's controls were shit to me. I never liked them in that game. The lack of camera controls certainly didn't help. And although I appreciated a lot of the things it did at the time, I never once thought it was the best game of all time.

The thread asks if BOTW will dethrone OoT. And to me, there are many games that came out that were better, including both Wind Waker and Twilight Princess.

Review standards from 1998 and current review standards are quite different, for various reasons. We will probably never see another game reach a meta of 99. But you should also keep in mind that the score is based on only 22 reviews. Had there been more reviewers like there are now, with a lot of variations in tastes and bias, you can be sure Ocarina of Time's meta score would have been different. I will go further and say that Ocarina of Time came out during an era where people were much more easily impressionable.

We talking about 1st generation of 3D games and from today standpoint controls and camera were very bad back than, but Zelda OoT actually had great controls and camera for that time and actually better than most games on market of that time (for instance miles better than SM64), You didn't thought it was the best game of all time, but actually lots a people and all media from that time did.

Thats offcourse your personal opinion, but offcourse that OoT in case was better and more complete game when arrived than WW and TP when they arrived.

Maybe score would be different, but fact is that in that gen we had lots great games and actually some of best games ever (SM64, FFVII, MetalGearSolid, GoldenEye007, Banjo Kazzoie, Silent Hill, RE1/2, TombRaider 1/2....), and OoT beat them all with reviews and scores. Dont forget that even 3DS version of OoT received score of 94 13 years after original release, that means that OoT was great game even 13 years after release and of course than back than on original launch was much better game.
