Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Will Breath of the Wild finally dethrone Ocarina of Time for people? Let's look at the facts

So I've been seeing some post (on other forums per say) say they really want BOTW to finally dethrone OOT but probably won't because Ocarina of Time was just a monster in hype and was one of the first games such amazing ratings and that it was the first 3D Zelda. Now let's look at what Ocarina of Time brought to the series and remained a standard in most Zelda games and let's see what Breath of the Wild will bring and change. Obviously Ocarina of Time was a huge boost in the series and has done things that current Zelda's still do and other games do to. However, I think Breath of the Wild adds so much to the series that that BOTW can dethrone Ocarina of Time. Ocarina of Time is my favorite but with everything, I am seeing with BOTW, I am looking forward to my new favorite Zelda.

Ocarina of Time: (tell me if I forgot anything)

  • First 3D Zelda
  • Epona
  • First playable musical instrument (important to the story, not like the flute in Zelda 1 and Link's Awakening )
  • Ganondorf
  • Z-target
  • Created the 3 timelines
  • Time Travel
  • Changed 'Zelda' to just being more then a kidnapped Princess

Breath of the Wild: (tell me if I forgot anything)

  • First HD Zelda
  • A more integrated horse system (can have multiple horses, they can also die)
  • Food system
  • Climbing system
  • Shrines
  • First 3D truly Open World Zelda
  • No hearts in grass, making the game a lot more difficult
  • Guardians
  • Voice acting
  • Integrated and complex physics system that will really change the gameplay
  • Sliding on shields anytime you want
  • Sheikah Slate and Runes

Only time will tell, but as a prediction for me, this will destroy Ocarina of Time in every way possible. I know what OoT did for the industry but BotW...man, I'm salivating over this game.

I haven't kept up with many new game releases lately, but one game I made sure to keep up with is BoTW. The gameplay has been stunning to look at so far, can't wait to get my hands on it.

oot was a giant leap in the action adventure genre i dont see that in botw ..but still if its a well balanced open world, which is my biggest concern, i dont see why not.. no matter how great oot is it simply cant stay n1 forever.

OoT never sat on the throne as far as I'm concerned. The question for me is will it take the crown from ALTTP?

I was hyped for OoT when it first came out on the N64. But my hype for Breath of the Wild is higher. I've been wishing for the series to go back to its roots for quite some time now (mostly to make it more open like the first Zelda was, with less hand holding and more focus on exploration), and BOTW seems to be going in that direction in an interesting way.

We have this exact same discussion every 3-5 years and the answer is always yes.

Pretty sure a lot of gamers have dethroned OoT by now.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

No. I am not even a Zelda series fan, and I know that a lot of the stuff you mentioned in the list for OoT was either pioneered in that game at the time or just stood head and shoulders in quality above every other game around. It wasn't just about firsts in the series. It set the standard for how 3d was handled in adventure games.

BotW on the other hand looks to have cool things for the series and will probably be a game of the year contender, but it doesn't look like games after it will be forever changed the way it happened with OoT. Still, BotW will probably be the better game. As a non Zelda fan, I don't have the nostalgia so a newer more polished open world Zelda sounds more appealing that OoT.

i blame oot 3d for that its just not the same experience as playing it on the n64 on a tv especially in the late 90s.

In general? Maybe. Personally though, no way. I don't think any Zelda game will ever come close to surpassing Ocarina of Time/Skyward Sword (My two absolute favorite games in the series). Also, as much as I'm excited for Breath of the Wild, they made so many changes to the Zelda formula that I'm still not sure if I'll like it or not, only time will tell really.

OOT was one of the best games of the worst gens ever. No disrespect to it. I loved it at the time, but doubt it would hold up today. Doubt it hard. BOTW will be better.
