Digital or Physical

Physical for ever 77 68.75%

Ownership is overrated 35 31.25%

Total:112

That's why I always buy physical copies. They are mine, I can play whenever I want, resell, trade, borrow. I only get digital copies when they are heavily discounted (got Lego Marvel for 7 dollars). I refuse to pay the same for a copy that's naturally inferior since I can't do none of the above.

The mighty Rol has Spoken.

I buy digital all the time on steam but one thing I never buy are games that are always online unless the game is multiplayer only. So I never had issues like this post ubisoft boycott.

If by some reason Valve goes out of business, you will lose all your games. Steam uses regular DRM checks even in offline mode. DRM is always garbage and brings zero benefits to consumers. It's the companies pushing a problem that's theirs (piracy) over the consumer. They screw the paying consumers because of pirates. If the aforementioned scenario happens, you, the guy who bought the game, will lose your products. As for the pirates? Well, their copies will still work, so they actually got a superior product with zero cost.

And if by some reason all your physical games get stolen or damaged, you will lose all your games. These doomsday scenarios work both ways.

But if you had the disc you could only be playing it in one system anyway? I'm not sure I understand this, as you have it you can have your kids playing a game on your primary ps4 offline and you can be in another room playing the same game on the secondary ps4 while it's connected to psn.

So if the price was to come into play not only are digital games for the most part a great deal cheaper, they're purchasable and delivered right to your TV and you get to potentially have 2 copies of the game to play on both machines every other minute of the year... except for during maintenance.

Definitely think the pros outweigh the cons no matter what way you look at things really in terms of digital games library. (there are some cons, but what you've listed here most certainly are not the major ones)

hmm, yet your profile says you're from Ireland? I know for sure that digital prices are a great deal more expensive in the UK, and I've seen people say the same is true for other European countries too. Does that not apply in Ireland?

Could be that the game shops near me are shite.

Bioshock the collection is currently on sale for €24 from psn, CEX and gamestop are offering the title pre owned only atm here both for around €50

Sure it's a title on sale, but the great thing when it comes to using psn over somewhere that deals in pre owned stuff is while I'm paying less for the game, absolutely zero of the €50 for the pre owned title at CEX/Gamestop goes to the developers of the game, so all I'd be doing would be paying the wages of staff there.

Just with my own buying habits at least I find digital to be a lot cheaper for me, both in terms of title availability and cost.

Why not check me out on youtube and help me on the way to 2k subs over at www.youtube.com/stormcloudlive

Personally I never want the hassle of having to deal with a physical copy of a game ever again.  Now...  This is likely because I have been spoiled by steam and have blazing fast internet....

Even though I could save 20% buying my games physically via amazon, I just cant do it.  I want them digitally, and  I dont want to keep track of my games physically anymore, I log in and there they are.  I will have my switch armed with a 200 GB sdxc and ready to roll on launch day.

High fives; I'm in the same boat! :D

The BuShA owns all!

Digital sucks... period. The only thing it has on consoles over physical is not having to put a disc in/put it away. Other than that, I can't come up with one legit reason to ever buy digitally. I don't even buy tiny indie games on consoles anymore. I won't buy ANY digital only release anymore. If it doesn't come out physically, it can fuck off.

Got the retail version last week for 18€ from Saturn.

That's why I prefer physical. For every digital sale, I can find a physical version on sale that's even cheaper (95% of the time). Thus, I only own very few digital games that aren't indies.

When people write about the pain of having digital games, I'm reminded of the ludicrous infomercials where the most mundane task becomes impossible...

I simply can't fathom how people get in such trouble with digital games, I've been more or less 100% digital for 5-6 years now and rarely run into any sort of trouble, my only hick-up was having somewhat slow internet a few years back but even that was mostly inconvenient and not something that hurt my gaming prospects or enjoyment.

Well obviously it's not something illegal, but there needs to be some sort of limit in place. So the question is, why do your kids need to log in to your profile in order to play a game? Couldn't they have their own profile?

Otherwise you might as well share your profile between an entire family and friends and have a shared library.

Perhaps a good workaround would be an IP check and if the 2 consoles are connected have the same IP then it could recognize they are 2 "primary" consoles on the same household. Still it wouldn't be ok to have the same game playing on both consoles at the same time, but as long as the game being played was different it would be like having a physical disk in the tray.

They need to log into my profile as save games, including Minecraft worlds, are locked to profiles. To be able to play on our shared world they need to start Minecraft from my profile. Same with Terraria and Lego dimensions. Luckily I never played Skylanders with them and they started that on their own profile.

I'm not trying to play the same game on 2 consoles, 2 different games on the same profile. If the same profile logs in from the same IP, why not allow it? You can be logged into ps3 and ps4 at the same time. We never had this issue before when my kids played on the ps3 with me on the ps4.

In both cases, it's either my fault or a crime. You could use the same logic to a car: someone can crash on you or it may be stolen. It also works to a house, a watch, anything. You won't damage your entire collection unless your house catches fire or you face a flood. It's also not that common to have someone break into your house and steal your games.

Valve shutting down the servers would remove you hability to play ALL your games at once. It's a business decision screwing you over stuff you paid. It's not a physical barrier. It's like Volks went out of business and they disabled all Golfs in the world.

If I have the disc I can play it on any system without having to be logged in on my account. I don't want to play the same game on 2 different systems, I simply want to play a game on the pro, while my kids play another on the base ps4. The problem is a lot of games nowadays only have a digital release. DC VR I can still get a retail copy off, however many other VR games are digital only.

Conina said:

If you have bonus tracks or cars installed, that would have probably also happened with a retail version of DriveClub VR.

So if you don't abstain from ANY digital content (even if the licenses are free), you will have problems on a non-primary PS4 sometimes. Deal with it. ;)

What normally happens with the retail version is that club access disappears which means cars unlocked by club level are temporarily not useable. I have the retail version of normal DC with season pass. All the add on content does stay accessible. It's kinda moronic too, but nothing like getting thrown out of the game entirely.

Edit: Actually after checking on the secondary ps4, without signing into psn I can play DC with all downloaded tracks, even DriveClub Bikes, however only with 1 bike and the original set of cars, all DLC cars are unaccesible. Still better than not playing at all :/

His kids would only be able to play the games there on different accounts if that was set as the primary PS4. I suppose you could say it's tied to the system, but only the primary system so if you change that you'd lose access on non-primary systems unless using your own account (and being connected online apparently).

I don't know if I understand what you said there.
I know you can play the games from one account on another in the same system.
I also know you can download the same games to two different systems.

So he can have his kids playing his games on another account on the PS4, and also have his games on his new PS4.
Now, if I understood what you said, you are saying his kids will only be able to play his games while his old PS4 is set as his account primary system, so anyway he'll have to keep playing on his Pro as a secondary system, and if he changes that, making the Pro his account primary system, his kids won't be able to play those games on the old PS4 anymore, was that what you said?

I dunno if that's the case.

The games aren't really tied to the system. A system set as primary allows other users and yourself to play any digital content on that system, on or offline, that's tied to the primary account holder. A system can be the primary for multiple accounts, but only one system can be the primary for any one account.

So if I set my pro as primary, my kids cannot play my digital content on the base ps4 from their accounts. Same as I can now only play my digital content on the pro when signed into psn on my account. (Which was the issue last night, psn was down)

Well what is the solution?

1. I play games with my kids together, result: Savegames with our shared data are locked to my account, eg our 3 year old Minecraft world.
2. My kids also like to play those games without me yet can only continue that shared data by starting the game from my account.
3. I like to play something else too now and then while they're messing about in Minecraft or Terraria, hence I bought a second system, the pro.
4. Can't log in to the same account on two different ps4s
5. Can't play digital games on a secondary system without logging in.

So indeed the most mundane task seems to become impossible. So far if it's an offline game they want to play it's still possible by making sure the primary does not log in to psn (and boot me out of the pro). Yet they can't play PvZ GW2 on the base ps4 while I try to play DC VR on the pro. It's impossible. Ergo, ps4 is not family friendly. (I guess it's possible if they start from scratch and pay CAD 70 for ps+ themselves which would be me paying double while I'm not even playing online multiplayer)
