Aight, I wanna be real with you all I've never bought a car before nor financed one and the dealer I'm working with kinda gives me off vibes. So I wanna know your take on my situation. I don't normally like sharing details like this super publicly but I also don't want to get screwed by this dealership. Now that is all out of the way, here's what I'm going through:

So I need a car. I just moved across the country from Oregon to Ohio. Everything is settled EXCEPT getting a car. So the past few days I've been car hunting. Something cheap that I can finance since my credit isn't that good (between 600-650). I found a few corolla's for sale, about $2,500-3,500 in good condition. Well I went to a dealership today to finance one and after a few hours was told I can't get it due to its pricing and blah blah blah. Basically it's too cheap and my credit is too new. So they "pulled" a few strings...

A few hours pass after talking to banks and stuff they get a banker to come in. They come up with a deal! And it's a 2009 BMW car of some sort. They said it's fine and has been in 0 car wrecks. It looks good as well. It's also $10,500... Well the banker and the dealer are friends and "pulled a few strings" and said I only need to put $1,000 down and I'd only be paying no more than $270 a month for it.

Given my credit, it feels suspicious they'd be making me pay something someone with good credit would pay. But here's what really bothered me: The banker walks up to me and says, "Hey, so a 614 number (Ohio area code) is going to be calling you at some point. Make sure to tell them you put $2,400 down. Don't tell them you're only putting $1,000 down. Okay?" That just felt shady and weird... I mean if he's doing it to cut me a good deal like he says I'm fine but, I don't know x.x

Anyway, at this point I have not test driven the car (I've seen it. I'm testing it tomorrow) and I've yet to put any money down for the car. But I have signed some paperwork for it. I can still get out of this if this doesn't feel right, right?

But yeah, I probably sound naive and shit. That's because I am, I've never bought a car before nor by myself. I just wanna make sure 100% I don't get royally fucked by these people.

BTW: Here's their website if you wanna check it out:  http://www.columbusluxurycars.com/

UPDATE: I also canceled the card I lent them because I honestly don't trust them.

UPDATE #2: After telling on them to the loan company, they gave up the case. I'm free of their contract!

No.

Maintanenece on a BMW can cost an arm and a leg when you aren't doing the majority of the work yourself.

Narrow down the car you want to 4 different makes/models, and only stray from that selection in terms of generation, eg 3th gen corolla, then 2nd gen if money is tight or 4th gen if you find a deal.

Never buy "whatever you can afford", it always, ALWAYS turns out to be a bad investment.

Whats your take on the banker acting weird about some phone call?

I would stay away from this one. Also, just because a car hasn't experienced a wreck doesn't necessarily mean that it was properly maintained by the previous owner(s).

Nahh don't bother. One of my friends got an old luxary car like that at a similar price and it was a nightmare after a few months. For $10,000 price range, get a nice reliable Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla. They aren't fancy but boy are they reliable!

its common practice for dealers and their financial department to try and convince you that you're getting a great deal and that they did you a favor in getting it.

Watch this and you'll get a better idea of how they operate, watch a bunch of other "dealership tricks" videos on youtube too, you'll see a lot of what you experience sets off red flags.

Yeah, I guess I could probably do something more reliable like that.

Yea! Trust me when I say at that price range, you need reliability more so than luxury and your Honda/Toyota car will save you money on gas and etc. So that luxury car that you will want will come sooner than you think!

And Audi is better anyway so... :P

Yeah. I'll watch it :3 Well I signed some papers. But I haven't paid anything yet. Am I still legally obligated to this car?

That place looks likes it's a buy-here-pay-here type dealer, probably got the cars from salvage, history reports don't always show everything. For your first car stay right the hell away from anything German, cost of ownership is ludicrous. They are built to separate the upper middle class yearning for status from their money, and I adore BMW induction engines, but there is so much mickey mouse shit that goes wrong with them that they simply aren't worth it.
