Forums - Gaming Discussion - I hardly buy games at full retail price. Do you?

It's hard for me to justify $60 (I'm in North America) for a newly released game. I think from a market stand point, $60 is fair.  But unless it's a limited run Limited Edition, I cannot remember the last time I bought a game at its original retail price physical or digital.  In fact, not one of my PS4 games were bought at original retail price with the exception of Limited Editions.  In fact, I paid $40 for Senran Kagura Estival Versus - Endless Summer Edition - for the PS4 new when the original retail price was $60.  The same applies to my VITA collection with the exception of Dungeon Travelers 2.  But in this case I paid MORE than retail (just a couple of bucks) because it was a rare title.  I do support the gaming industry, but it has to be a compromise between that and financial priorities.

Nah I almost always get games at least 6 months after release. I have a massive back-catalog to get through as it is, so there's no point paying full-price for new games.

Crash Bandicoot Trilogy is the only game I've pre-ordered in the last decade.

Yes, not sure how this is even a question. If I want something I buy it, I'm not that poor to be happy about saving $20 buy waiting a few weeks/months to play hotly anticipated games like Yakuza 0, Gravity Rush 2 or Nioh.

I never buy the games that I know are going to sell well at full price. All the games I know will have limited games sold I always buy new in order to support them.

And not judging anyone for their buying habits, the $60 retail price has been around since last gen.  There's a large enough market to support this price point.  Good for them.  It's just ot my cup o' tea.

I buy all my "niche" Japanese PS4, and especially Vita games at full price, because unlike say, Uncharted 4, they basically require it. With the Vita, I have to look at the release list, and pre-order from EB Games. Best Buy stopped carrying Vita about 8 months ago. For PS4 Pretty much the same. Best Buy may get a certain title, but even if they do, it will be like 2 or 3 copies. I buy my "big" games at Best Buy most of the time, and for those, about 90% of the time, I wait for a price drop. With digital, it's 100% massive price drops or not at all.

Save for specific exceptions on which I don't mind shelling out 60 bucks, I almost always wait for a huge price cut, yeah.

Almost every game. I hate having a backlog. Plus I want to play the game when it releases.
Plus with Amazon Prime 20% off saves a lot. Not to mention I just trade it right back to get the most value.

I guess one interpretation of having a backlog is that I don't play as often as I should which is partially true.  But if you can knock one game out right after another, then that sounds like it's worth it.  More power to you.

I have no idea why this would be confusing for you.  As many different people have different priorities with their money, it's easily a valid question.

On topic, I very rarely buy anything at launch.  I will usually only pre-order titles that I have complete faith in playing, like a Fallout or a Borderlands.  LA Noire is the game that taught me not to waste money on hype alone.  I also don't pay $60 for short games.

Well on PC I do use cd-key websites a lot so games at launch are around $35-40 but for consoles I do spent full price on occation, I would say 2 times a year.

Last year I bought Uncharted 4 and Final Fantasy XV at full price, this year I am planning to buy Persona 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 at full price. I used to buy more games on XBox360 and PS3 but there are way fewer exclusives so I end up buying most things discounted on pc :)
