Really hard to say. There are so many variables with these consoles that it is almost impossible to tell where their limits are. With every update, they become better and better at handling non gaming tasks which is extreamly vital to mass market growth. As they continue to get cheaper, it is going to be harder and harder for people to justify getting an Amazon Fire TV Box or Apple TV unit.
As they continue to gain app support via Universal Windows Applications, and the expansion to PSVR, both devices will become more and more competitive with PCs, and I fully believe they will replace the PC in many homes in time. I know the ideas that console can do more than play games can be quite unpopular in the gaming community, but it in truth is a huge reeason why ~160 million people had PS2. Non gaming functions are extreamly important to pushing past the core and casual gamers to the absolute outskirts.
Beyond that on the PlayStation side Sony is continuing to up their game on the services side, with PS Vue, PS Now, PS Video, and PS Music getting better and better with every update. Soon PS Vue will offer local CBS stations nation wide, and the other local stations will follow closly behind. IPTV is getting bigger and bigger, and PS Vue has a huge lead in features and content vs its competitors.
On the gaming side both devices have a lot left to give. PSVR is just getting started. Scorpio will bring VR to Microsoft, and with both manufacturers offering VR, we can start seeing a real push by 3rd parties, for AAA VR experiences. As mentioned by others PlayStation especially has a massive line-up of games coming. The first Gran Turismo of the generation, the first The Last Of Us, the first God of War, all of these are ~10 million selling franchises, that will be making their first appearance on PS4. They also have Horizan by Guerrilla Games, Dreams from Media Molecule, and Days Gone from Sony Bend which are all massive AAA 1st party games. Then they have stuff like Crash, FFVII, Wipeout PS4, Spiderman, and the PSP collection of games.
Looking at 3rd parties, we have Red Dead 2 coming, and we are still waiting on a Grand Theft Auto for this generation. Mass Effect is making its first apperance this gen in a few weeks. Tekken will be here in the Summer, Street Fighter V is starting to become a very good game. Ace Combat 7 is coming and looks like an absolute game changer in VR. Between HDR and VR we are going to have a whole new wave of games coming that absolutly blow away what we have seen from 2013 - 2016. Even stuff like Madden, Fifa, NBA 2K, PGA Tour Golf, Call of Duty, Assasins Creed, and so much more are going to get massive boosts as people start to see stuff made from day one with VR and HDR in mind. HDR is next gen TV, and VR is the successor to TV. So those alone, will help sell a lot of consoles.
So it is hard to say when this gen will peak. It could have already peaked, or it could just be getting ready to absolutly launch into places we have never seen before. The future of the business has never been so muddy. I honestly think we could be on our way to seeing console sales from both Sony and Micorosft climb year over year for the next decade, and maybe beyond.
