Forums - Politics Discussion - Turkey's Erdoğan approves bill giving him sweeping new powers

If the Ottomans existed today, they would be a superpower only behind the US and Europe. They would control all of the oil, and since they controlled the oil, there wouldn't be a Saudi Arabia funded terrorism problem.

It's a shame the West made such a mess of the middle east, now they're paying the price of a destabilized region leaking thousands of unhappy people.

Now don't you paint such an idealistic picture of the Ottomans. Had they not fallen, they'd be continuing with their invasions on Europe till it fell to islam. There's been too many of them to deny that. Thankfully Sobieski solveld that problem in Vienna. Also, if you consider gdp of current muslim states, that Ottoman Empire wouldn't be near to being the 3rd power after US and EU. China, Japan and even Germany would still be ahead.

It's a shame the West left Middle East in the first place. In general decolonization has proven to be a complete tragedy. Mainly for the people that were left alone in those countries (especially - Africa), but now former colonial superpowers are starting to pay for that mistake as well. The Middle East has been the most peaceful when it was controlled by Europeans. Westerners left these countries and let them fall into chaos, because we believe in freedom and all that jazz, but now China is colonizing them again either way.

PS. Turkish, don't you feel that at this point you are all spitting Ataturk in the face with what you're allowing Erdogan to do? I mean, wouldn't he be the first to overthrow him and his islamic policies? I always thought the Turkish people respected Ataturk to this day, yet now they support this?

Funny guy, the Ottomans stopped invading since the 17th century when they stagnated and never recovered. Also Sobieski probably regretted his decision to help the Austrians because soon after Poland was partitioned and stopped existing, only the Ottomans continued to recognize them.

Also dont forget the Dutch would rather live under the Ottomans than the pope. They had a phrase Liever Turks dan Paaps, the protestants hated the Catholics and preferred the Ottomans https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liever_Turks_dan_Paaps

Today the Middle Eastern oil would've propelled the Ottomans to be the one of the most prosperous nation on earth. It would certainly be only behind US and China in terms of GDP, the population would also be at least twice as big with parts of Balkans and Middle East still attached. The wealth would be distributed more equally instead of a few rich sheiks living in luxury in the desert, the Ottoman/Turkish interpretation of Islam is also one of tolerance. Today there would not be Saudi funded terrorism.

The mysery in the world is all thanks to Western intervention in the middle east since WW1. Every conflict you see from Palestine to Isis is thanks to the West. The Middle East only knew peace under the Turks, it was under Turkish control for the past 700-800 years and people of different faith lived peacefully next to each other. The Turks should really be the leader of the Muslim world again because it's only their interpretation that can save Islam from Wahhabi extremism.

What can we do about Erdogan? It's your Western leaders that allowed Erdogan to come to power, 10 years ago Europe was against Turkey's secular institutions, now they want it back after seeing Erdogans real face. Erdogan is only in power because the opposition is weak.
