Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Switch - 8th or 9th Gen?

What gen is the Switch?

8th gen 25 33.33%

9th gen 50 66.67%

Total:75

Is the Nintendo Switch an 8th gen console, or 9th gen?

If you adhere to the idea that it's incremental, then surely it's 9th gen? However, if power has anything to do with it, then surely it's 8th gen, and that'd make the Wii U 7th gen and the Wii 6th gen????

lol

9th

I think it's 8.62478931th gen

If the NES is 1st gen, the Switch is 7th gen. Although generations are stupid. If you take power into account, it is the same generation as PS3 / X360 even though both systems have stronger hardware.

Generations are arbitrary and undefined attempts to classify a system but it is impossible to identify the start and end of a gereration, especially between different companies with completely different life cycles and strategies. There are also no facts about it, just opinions. But opinions are no hard and reliable facts.

Do we really need another one of these threads? We just had an identical thread a few weeks ago, and probably several before that.

I think it should be gen One

Genwunner.

How many times will this question be asked?

If we consider it a HC, as Wii U, PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox One, Xbox One S and probably Scorpio: Switch is from 8th generation.

If we consider it a HH: the first, one and probably only 9th generation portable gaming system.

Power has nothing to do with it.

Though I'm hesitant to call it 9th gen. It will be competing with current consoles PS4/One/3DS, which are all part of the 8th gen, so it is 8th gen.

But when the next gen consoles come out, it will also be competing against them, so its also 9th gen.

So it's CURRENT Gen.

A generation of consoles, is more than one.
Its what they compete with as well.

If its gonna spend most of its time competeing against the Xbox One & Playstation 4, that means it belongs to the same generation of consoles as they do.

Its 8th gen.

There is no technology advancements (in graphics) that make it stand head & shoulder above other 8th gen consoles. This again points to it being amoung the 8th gen consoles.

Call it 8.5 if you must, because it released so late into the gen, but its not a 9th gen system.

When playstation 5 launches, Nintendo will have a Switch 2, which will then be its 9th gen console.
