Which direction do you want them to go? What game would you use as an example.

Most of them, really.
What doesn't appeal to me is a small, locked-in group of same-ish looking party members and the complete jump to group-based action-RPG combat leaves me cold. If this game wasn't a Final Fantasy title then I would never have looked at it twice.
Maybe the next Final Fantasy will have a large and diverse cast with different party members you can discover and add to your group. Maybe they won't all look like they just stepped out of the same salon before they head down to the VIP lounge at the club. However, it wouldn't surprise me if they continued with the same style of combat because it's really popular in Japan.
It will probably be another 6-8 years before the next one, anyway. I'm still betting that it will be a group of teenaged female idols.
