Unlikely. Unless the digital sales are far beyond what's expected, I don't see it ever passing VII, even counting just the original PS1 release. 8-9 million sounds feasible with all versions combined. Still, anything is possible, especially if the game is released on more platforms in the future.

I think it will keep a steady 100k~150k per week for some time. Many people are cautious about jumping in FF after the hot mess that were XIII and XIV initial release. And still, we have to wait for re-releases and discounts.

I think it can get to VII original release numbers with discounts, but I doubt it has a chance at everything VII really sold

I hope it does. I would imagine it's close to 7 million in sales by this time in Feb. With sales, and DLC still coming, it's definitely possible.

Which direction do you want them to go?  What game would you use as an example. 

Most of them, really.  

What doesn't appeal to me is a small, locked-in group of same-ish looking party members and the complete jump to group-based action-RPG combat leaves me cold.  If this game wasn't a Final Fantasy title then I would never have looked at it twice.  

Maybe the next Final Fantasy will have a large and diverse cast with different party members you can discover and add to your group.  Maybe they won't all look like they just stepped out of the same salon before they head down to the VIP lounge at the club.  However, it wouldn't surprise me if they continued with the same style of combat because it's really popular in Japan.

It will probably be another 6-8 years before the next one, anyway.  I'm still betting that it will be a group of teenaged female idols.

Then Octopath Travellers might just be the game for you!
