It has become overwhelmingly obvious that this forum has been ahead of its time in a negative way for a long time now by embracing the regressive idea of safe spaces. From a young age I learned that people will say things that I disagree with, perhaps vehemently so, but just as I had a right to state my mind so did they. I had no qualms with this and took the idiom "sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me" to heart. It seems now, more than ever before, that this strengthening idea has fallen by the wayside in favor of a puppies and rainbows society wherein no one can actually speak their mind on a topic due to some random person becoming flustered by even the most minuscule incendiary comment (intentional or not).

I would not advocate that all speech here should be protected, but there has to be a happy medium between overtly racist/bigoted comments and mere snark - and that has been censored to oblivion. If anyone finds anything objectionable no matter how slight on this website it seems as though a ban is inevitable. What I think we ought to do is amend some of the rules for increased flexibility. Some comments, while they may upset someone of delicate sensibilities, should be allowed a pass. We want to have a bit of fun here, right? Afterall, so much of wit is not politically correct and is often incendiary - see every single comedy show ever.

What does the community think about the current rule enforcement - do you love it or would you appreciate a bit of latitude?

No offense, but we aren't censoring everything to oblivion. We just moderate assholes and people who do nothing to help a conversation.

many people express their opinions by insulting anyone who disagrees with them. See how much liberals insult conservatives (and vice versa). Feminist and religious threads aren't any better.

I had a thread about this topic a while ago- we don't need to be more lax or stern about the rules. The rules are (in all honesty) as fair and unbiased as they can get. It's just up to people to decide whether or not they want to be respectful or not.

The forum is not a safe space. The speech you're obviously trying to defend aren't snarks, there are clearly a few individuals who make obvious racist comments or frame forum posts in such a way to instigate flame wars in the community. You have to follow the rules.

On the other hand, I once got banned for saying Windows 10 is ******** and I think that was a little over the top.

There's a big difference between voicing an unpopular opinion and being disrespectful. VGC is much better than most places at making that distinction, and because of that there are a wide variety of political views expressed on this site.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

You noticed now?

“Simple minds have always confused great honesty with great rudeness.” - Sherlock Holmes, Elementary (2013).

While the more active members on here are clearly left-leaning, all opinions are clearly tolerated here. I'm pretty conservative and it's pretty rare for over zealous mods to moderate people for anything less than direct attacks.

If your opinion offends people then it's still fine here.
