Forums - Sony Discussion - Nioh Review Thread - MC: 88 / GR: 88.87%

Man, it's a really good time to be a PS4 owner right now. TLG coming out, then Gravity Rush 2, then Yakuza 0 only 4 days later. All great games. Now, Nioh is being reviewed solidly, and Horizon is right around the corner and all previews are extremely positive. It's kind of insane to get so many exclusives so quickly from Playstation, especially for it being only (fiscal) Q1. Playstation exclusives are usually sparsed throughout the year to continuously tide you over until the next released. But we've been bombarded lately. And that's looking to be the case for the entire year. Even Hellblade just got confirmed for a 2017 release

Yeah, it's always the same. If a game is really hard magazines should just inform readers that the game is only for people who like extremely hard games but the score shouldn't suffer from that, it's after all the whole point of the game to be hard and challenging. If it's too frustrating for some then they should just mention that and not reduce the score b/c of that.

There is bad storytelling, bad graphics, controlls and so on but difficulty is pretty much something which everyone experiences totally different.

About difficulty. This is an unpopular opinion between the most hardcore gamers out there, but these kind of games, and I mean Soul series and, in this case, Ni-oh, should have an easy option for people who is incapable of beating them. That wouldn't hurt anyone, just play it on normal difficulty and let the people who is frustrated as hell try to beat it on easy mode. People's skill are different, so it's fitting that an easy difficulty exists (even a Nightmare difficulty for those who find Ni-oh easy). So I think that docking points because of that is fair, since it's not accesible for many people. Yeah, I've beaten Souls games, but I know people who is incapable (and I mean, totally incapable, not because they haven't even tried) to beat them.

I think it is fine to say "Warning: This game is hard", but to use that as some metric toward the score doesn't sit well with me. Mega Man is hard, but that does mean some entries weren't absolute classics.

Some games are brilliant for what they are and don't have a wide audience. The idea that a 90+ game has to have wide appeal makes no sense to me. I think reviewers should respect readers to know "I like this type of game or not" rather than demanding for uniformity.

Nioh looks amazing for what it is. Now, as someone who struggled big time with Demons Souls and watches the wife play Bloodborne I can appreciate Nioh despite the expectation I likely would not be able to beat it.

Well if you are/were good at the Souls games you would know that you don't need to be "good" to play them. All it takes is learning the game and mechanics movement of enemies and you can beat it in no time.

When we get a game with dumb AI they dock points, complain it's too easy and still Complain but a little difficulty.I've played all the demos for this game and found the difficulty to be fair. But to each his own.

Another fantastic ps4 console exclusive. 2016 ps4 is hitting it out of the park. It's all about the games games games. As Sony says, #4ThePlayers

Goddammit, Sony, you don't need to release two 70-hour games every week. Space your releases out a little bit.
But, in any case, I'm glad to see that the game is good. I was reserved in my expectations, because a lot of people fail at the Souls formula, but this is good to see.

I disagree, as difficulty is part of the experience, and being able to achieve your way throught the game also is.
If the game wants to make players deserve to keep going, then no, it should not have an easy mode.

Nioh last demo second boss (optional) made me his bitch, I lost so many times I would think I need to go to normal mode to beat it (as it would be hard mode normally), but what would be the achievement on it? In the end, after hours straight of losing to him, I did beat him, I did it by myself, the sensation was so fucking good.

The other boss, even the Twilight mode boss, were decently hard, like most Souls bosses, you die sometimes but learn and win, that's part of the game, learning.

I agree that difficulty and being able to achieve your way through the game is part of the experience. What I mean is that each gamer has different skills. That's kind of obvious. So some gamers might find that hypothetical "easy" mode really challenging, in the same way we found that normal mode challenging. I get that challlenge is part of the game, but, like with Souls series, there are people who is totally incapable of beating them. Maybe because they're not really skilled players. Maybe because they don't put a lot of hours into games. Maybe because they're not really good at Action RPGs (I know I'm really bad at FPS games for example, but those have options generally). But if they find the setting and gameplay appealing, I'm not sure why not having an option. I'm in to everything which involves more options to the players. Same with DS saga.

Yeah, I found the difficulty fair, for me. But, well, I can assure you I know a lot of people who wasn't capable of beating the demo. And they tried it a thousand times. They just couldn't beat it and gave up with the game with a really bad impression about it. With an easy mode, they could have found the game challenging, like we do, but beatable.

I can see where people are coming from when they say they want an easy mode, but I don't agree that a lack of accessibility is a valid criticism for anything other than games aimed at a very young audience.
