Forums - Website Topics - Discuss: Harsher rules on non-gaming threads

Politics is a fucking mess no matter what way you slice it. You've got people who were only taught to think one way and you have a silver lining who are able to see fault in the political system, no matter who's running what. One thing that I've learned is that you can't force anybody to do anything you want them to do. Just let it be, evil destroys itself. Not that anybody on the treads is "evil" but people who only want to instigate and cause chaos, those individuals destroy themselves.

That being said, as a Gaming site, I do believe politics threads shouldn't show up on the front page. They should be able to be filtered, or users have a choice to not show threads that have an ID associated with politics in the database. That, or make a new site... VGPolitics

I dont mind the political threads, they do need more dedicated moderation tho. Althogether I do agree that no non-gaming thread shouldnt show up in the front page.

I think a person with an overall nonchalant attitude would really work with being a mod for political threads. Only problem is- who the heck would want to be a mod just for a section known as being troublesome.

I would rather the terrible adverts be fixed first so the site is usable on mobile devices. :P

As a user you can ignore the political discussions if you want. I often do.

For people not wanting to see politics threads on the front page: I created a browser userscript for hiding politics threads on the front page back in November. All you need is a browser with userscript support and it should work. For example, Firefox + Greasemonkey works fine. For Chrome, I think you need some addon too. Anyway, you can get the script here. It should install by clicking the button that says 'Raw'. By default, it dims politics threads, but you can change it to fully hide them very easily (I made a 'relatively simple' configuration section, and that's the best that's possible with a userscript). A userscript is not exactly an ideal solution but hey, it works!

Uh, anyway. I agree that politics discussion needs some work here. It's by far the most hostile discussion environment on this site. I'm not sure I like the hiding idea myself because it's probably really going to kill all politics discussion, but other than that, it seems like a decent idea. I think it would be better to moderate politics discussions somehow better, but I'm not really sure how.

Oh snap! The PC side got very nasty as of this morning. Yes, I know, adblock, just sayin'.

On topic, I hope political threads aren't pushed into the boonies. I generally don't partake, and agree they are a horrific mess, but they spark interest. Dirty, awful intestest. People can ignore them if they don't want to get involved. Like trophies. Works like a charm, handles like a dream.

Let the mods do their job as they see fit.

Except not all mods are fit for this role. Politics should just be removed from the front page.

Then take it up with an admin

Politics really bring out the worst in some people it seems, god damn. Some of the responses people have towards others just for having a different opinion are embarrassing and just utterly stupid.

Some people are acting like they were personally insulted or some shit just because someone has a different opinion or view from theirs.

There is a simple solution to this problem. Provide users with the ability to choose what sections of the forum showing up on the front page. The same way we can filter content on the "gamrconnect" domain.

No one will complain anymore and it's a solution that would please everybody. Getting the political topics off the front page completely would kill the discussion there and it would make vgchartz less enjoyable for me.

Sounds like liberal facism to me.
Don't like them don't read them.
Political discourse by its nature is dirty.
Sounds like you just can't handle the heat and are upset that you can't control the narrative like you can with a gaming discussion.
