Forums - Gaming Discussion - PlayStation may win many battles, But Windows will win the war.

I just watched Kingsglave again, and then it hit me. A somewhat controversial opinion, but one that I believe to be true.

Console gaming, Playstation..... can't be around forever. And no, streaming isn't what will replace it, for all the same reasons streaming won't replace the need for a dedicated computer. Everything will be windows at some popint.

To understand this, you need to first understand what is at the heart of every game. Technology and creativity. Now the creativity part can exist on any hardware, so lets focus on the technology.

From the time of their conception, console generations have been defined by technology; everytime there is a big enough leap in technology we get to see an almost proportional leap in what that technolgy does for gaming. Things look a lot better, worlds get a lot bigger, more things happen on screen....etc. We went from counting sprites (basically how many colours could be fit in as small a space as possible), to counting pixels. We went from counting levels, to having everything go open world and putting levels whereever in those worlds we want them to be. The things that were such a big deal 10 years ago, are so common and prevailant today that no one even mentions them.

But what happens in the next 20 years?

What happens when a $200 laptop is capable of pushing realtime graphics on par with the best CG movies on the market today? What happens when with regards to IQ, we can no longer tell the difference between a $200 PC and a $2000 PC? When the only difference in game performance is limited by the size of Tv you can afford and the quality of accesories you want to buy?

I say this now because if the last 25 years has thought us anything, its that tech will always move forward. What is cutting edge today is obsolete tomorrow. But something I thin we all don't consoder is this; graphical and technical quality isn't infinite. At some point, its will get so good that it no longer has anything to do with the tech driving it but the creativity of the developers. At that point it will no longer be about how graet they made leaves look, but how great the AI of the enemies are, hoe great the level design is and how great the story or music or art direction is.....

What place does a Playstation have in such a world? Why would anyone buy a dedicated gaming console when any PC on the planet can play games just as well and for just as cheap? Now, the only true advantage cnsoles have is the cost of entry. Thats not something taht can last forever.

What do you guys think?

Well, steam ins on windows, so........

seen intels skull canyon PC? Now imagine in 20yrs being able to buy something like that for as little as $200 but with 30 times the GPU powerof what we have today. You get that, which means you have a windows PC and of course steam.

I seen CEMU run Xenoblade X in 4K. That has me excited enough to become interested (even if the framerate sucked hard). I'm getting a gaming rig this year.

So you copy pasted what analysts predicted about mobiles becoming the future and replaced Androids and iOS with Windows.

lulz

If anything, Windows is on the way out, mobiles are becoming more and more powerful, they will fully replace desktops and laptops. To prevent that MS is desperately trying to put Windows on mobiles with little success.

In 20 years you will have desktops with Android on it rather than Windows.

Won't consoles get upgraded hardware again and again and PS4/Nintendo has the First Party and third party support.
I mean we are reaching the limits already of what can be achieved look at Last of Us 2 and Death Stranding.

As long as consoles hit that price point and have good games they are going to be a long long time here,And all in all VR/AR is the future whether we like it or not.

Like Consoles like PC if you are going to get same experience for 300$ why would you spend 700-1000$ for high end when there won't be any difference.

You say streaming isn't the answer but don't go into any detail about why.

Also why are you assuming people will have no need for a console 20 years from now but fully think laptops and home computers will still be going strong?

Well fel free to replace windows with whatever you want to replace it with. Point though is that it won't be consoles anymore. It verywell could be android.

Any $400 pc can already run every third party game that releases on consoles and probably better too. But PC's will never be as easy accessible as a home console. It shows in this gen that Playstation and even Xbox are still very much desired products on the market. There are quite a few gens ahead of us before the name Playstation doesn't exist anymore in gaming. Handheld games are another story since mobile and tablet gaming is much more accessible for the average citizen.

Pros consoles have over PC's are accessibility, media player that you can easily hook up to your tv. Couch co-op without any hassle just plug and play. And by far the most important exclusive games and content.
