I just watched Kingsglave again, and then it hit me. A somewhat controversial opinion, but one that I believe to be true.
Console gaming, Playstation..... can't be around forever. And no, streaming isn't what will replace it, for all the same reasons streaming won't replace the need for a dedicated computer. Everything will be windows at some popint.
To understand this, you need to first understand what is at the heart of every game. Technology and creativity. Now the creativity part can exist on any hardware, so lets focus on the technology.
From the time of their conception, console generations have been defined by technology; everytime there is a big enough leap in technology we get to see an almost proportional leap in what that technolgy does for gaming. Things look a lot better, worlds get a lot bigger, more things happen on screen....etc. We went from counting sprites (basically how many colours could be fit in as small a space as possible), to counting pixels. We went from counting levels, to having everything go open world and putting levels whereever in those worlds we want them to be. The things that were such a big deal 10 years ago, are so common and prevailant today that no one even mentions them.
But what happens in the next 20 years?
What happens when a $200 laptop is capable of pushing realtime graphics on par with the best CG movies on the market today? What happens when with regards to IQ, we can no longer tell the difference between a $200 PC and a $2000 PC? When the only difference in game performance is limited by the size of Tv you can afford and the quality of accesories you want to buy?
I say this now because if the last 25 years has thought us anything, its that tech will always move forward. What is cutting edge today is obsolete tomorrow. But something I thin we all don't consoder is this; graphical and technical quality isn't infinite. At some point, its will get so good that it no longer has anything to do with the tech driving it but the creativity of the developers. At that point it will no longer be about how graet they made leaves look, but how great the AI of the enemies are, hoe great the level design is and how great the story or music or art direction is.....
What place does a Playstation have in such a world? Why would anyone buy a dedicated gaming console when any PC on the planet can play games just as well and for just as cheap? Now, the only true advantage cnsoles have is the cost of entry. Thats not something taht can last forever.
What do you guys think?
