Forums - Politics Discussion - The Economist Just Downgraded the US From a ‘Full Democracy’ to a ‘Flawed Democracy’

*All* democracies are flawed. We don't need a hyperbolic, sensationalist headline to tell us that. We're not legally nor technically any less of a "democracy" than we were on January 19th.

Should also note that the US is a Constitutional Republic, not a democracy. In fact, the Founders detested the very idea of a true democracy. A democracy means mob rule, that the 51% can tell the other 49% what to do. Our system actually serves to protect the 49%.

we'll see in the next 4-8 years how much the 54% (of actual voters) that didn't vote Trump are actually protected from the despotism of the 46%

Based on what's going on, it seems to me that the 46% are the one needing protection, what with with being tortured and lit on fire...

sounds to me like Trump is strengthening terrorism

Trump is restoring freedom and democracy by building the US-Mexico wall. The wall can help slow down the drug cartels in Mexico.

Hmm... how did you come to that conclusion?

Dayyum, slowly sliding into a dictatorship?

Surprised it isn't already being classified as a dictatorship. It's already got the loud-mouthed sociopath who gets away with sexual assault, builds useless walls, demonizes specific groups of people, sleeps with an ugly gold digger, and wants to nuke everyone else.

Thanks for nothing America, you elected the bringer of the apocalypse.

How can you type something like this and not just laugh uncontrollably?

As far as the Economist, the US has never been a full democracy. A constitutional republic that has never required popular vote to select a President or to pass almost all federal law.

well, you pointed to acts of terrorism (= violence with a political or religious agenda)

Trump is knowingly acting strictly against the interests of the majority of voters and hence inviting acts of resistance of which terrorism is probably the most extreme

I pointed out how Anti-Trump supporters are being violent with multiple instances of them violently attacking Trump supporters.

And how is he acting against the interests of the majority? All those terrorist attacks by Islamists - are they because the government was acting against the interests of the people?

the US was certainly acting against the interests of islamists, they reacted with terrorism

and Trump goes against the voting majority that is in favor of the ACA, supports planed parenthood and abortion services, is against the southern wall and against torture etc

But we'e talking about US citizens here - not people living in Iraq or Syria.

What a curveball you throw... so terrorism is born from the government not bending to the majority?

Well I would like your interpretation of Brazil bailout for gun being like over 70% in favor of gun permit, but still the government gone and made it very very hard and impratical for anyone to have a gun.
