Will the Switch outsell the PS4 in Japan?

In Japan, Yes! 357 78.46%

In Japan, No! 98 21.54%

Total:455

If it doesn't, its in biiiig trouble.

Made a bet with LipeJJ and HylianYoshi that the XB1 will reach 30 million before Wii U reaches 15 million. Loser has to get avatar picked by winner for 6 months (or if I lose, either 6 months avatar control for both Lipe and Hylian, or my patrick avatar comes back forever).

It most certainly will.

And I can see it changing the PS4 to be even more of a Xbox clone, or similar or whatever you want to say. Sure 1st party sony will still produce their games, but I'm guessing most all 3rd party Japanese games that Sony was getting will go to Switch. All those anime style, jrpgs, visual novels, ect will abandon ps4.

The userbase size will just be too big to ignore on Switch for Japanese gamers, and not to mention the less powerful hardware will also be more appealing. Companies will be able to release games that look like Octopath, or other styles that you would see like on a 3DS and you wn't have the PS4 graphics crowd ignoring it cause it looks "indie" The sheer number of games will just be so much more. Square Enix will release 1 Final Fantasy 7 remake in the span of a half a dozen RPG's that look like Bravely Default/Octopath/I am Setsuna for the Switch.

Graphics have killed many genres. Or dwindled their size at least. The Switch is not only a hybrid in handheld/home console, but also in graphics. Their top games Zelda/Splatoon/Mario and stuff sit perfectly beside games like Pokémon Sun/Octopath/Monster Hunter. Because of the nature of Portable, poeople won't be expecting every game to be pushing cutting edge graphics.

It's a portable, of course it will.

It's just NA and EU that the ps4 will outsell it almost 3:1, While the Switch will take Japan by around the same amount probably.

It will definitely help with Japanese 3rd party support, and hopefully some of the games can make their way over here as well. Anything that can help push systems in the west will be a bonus.

Considering its a handheld I'd imagine it will. And it really should too.

Plus Nintendo will release a barebones sku that costs $200 and can't be played on the big screen in the next 1-2 years and that will do very well.

But why? Giving a device the ability to output video isn't expensive in the slightest.

If you mean one that isn't bundled with a dock then yeah sure, but removing the devices ability to actually use a dock wouldn't really cut costs at all. The only reason for that would be if Nintendo couldn't be arsed to sell docks seperately, though we already know they're going to do that.

Switch has to sell 18-20 million in Japan for that ecosystem to have any chance of real success, so yes, it has to outsell the PS4.

This is not even an option for them. If they can't manage that they're done as a hardware maker.

It will beat the PS4 easily, but I think it won't sell as well as some people think here. Even handhelds slowed down heavily in Japan in the last few years, surely in part because of mobile games. Handheld consoles did lose 50% of sales between the DS/PSP gen and the 3DS/Vita gen... Mobile games keep getting stronger there, so I think handheld consoles will continue to slow down.

Without significant changes (new, smaller, or handheld only  version, or big price cut), I think it will sell half of what the 3DS did, so maybe 12 millions.

Just curious but what is your LTD prediction for the PS4 in Japan?

Not sure... Home consoles are slowing down as well but the PS4 is really successful and there is less competition, so it could sell more or less as well as the PS3, 10 millions (8-10M because the gen will likely be shorter). "Easily" was a bit strong in my first comment ^^.

I was thinking along the same lines, it should be interesting to see where it all ends up. I'm currently creating a launch aligned sales chart for all the 8th gen platforms off of MediaCreate's numbers (except the XBO, sorry!) so I really want to see what will happen in the future. Maybe I'll make a thread in the coming months
