How it seems currently, Switch is pretty much an blue ocean product, as nobody else seems to be interested in making games for the oldschool. Notice also the price of pretty much everything on Switch. It is because the people in their 30's and 40's generally make more money than teenagers or people in their twenties, which is the target market for the AAA industry.

Actually, I think the average gamer is in their thirties at this point. I've always understood Blue ocean to be like the Wii, which essentially created a market from nothing. Nintendo seems to be trying to position the Switch into a specific, but existing, core gaming niche. The high prices are probably because they expect that kids will be able to share a single Switch unit if need be, and the older single gamers who will be their earliest adopters can afford it.

Average gamer might be in their thirties if you don't count in kids. However, with all the devices out there, everyone who plays any screen tap game every now and then, can be considered as gamer. The oldschool gamer isn't the core market. Yes, I may sometimes try out a game on my (work) tablet, but to actually play the shitty games for extensive time... Oh, no.

The above gets us to the important part, which is to actually have people to pay for your product. For me, for example, waste of money is less important than waste of time. It doesn't really matter if you pay 60€ for an industry AAA game or download some runner for free, if I have better things to do than sit in front of a screen. If the game can offer intensive gameplay in timeframe that fits me, we might have a winner.

Ei Kiinasti.

Eikä Japanisti.

Vaan pannaan jalalla koreasti.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

I agree with most of what you said, but I'm not as optimistic

The Switch is guaranteed to sell better than the Wii U, but I'm not sure about it reaching 3DS sales

There are a lot going for the Switch, but if Nintendo gets a bit careless and make dumb decisions, they could easily mess things up

[3DS] Winter Playtimes [Wii U]

It's a better version of the Wii U concept.

The concept is still in many respects the same thing though ... being able to play on the television and then being able to "switch" to play on a tablet-like device, the Switch can just go anywhere whereas the Wii U had to be near its base unit.

The Switch isnt another Wii U, but i would honestly prefer it if it was...

Think about it, a remade Wii U with better specs and its portable. It could run all the same games, yet open the door for so many new ones.

Not only is it a similar concept, Nintendo even used similar terminology for the Wii U. Here is the very first introduction trailer for the Wii U from E3 2011:

The first thing that it says is:

"Switch from the TV to the new controller".

I agree with everything except that Nintendo decided not to rescue the Wii U with heavy price cuts because consoles are not vitally important to their business.

I think it had more to do with not being able to afford it, or at the very least not willing to part with their precious cash reserves in order to do it. After already taking losses on the 3DS, I'm not sure even heavier losses on the Wii U would have been tolerated by investors. I'm not even sure it would have paid off anyway; even if the price of the Wii U dropped significantly, I don't think it would have dramatically increased sales because the system had other crippling problems besides price, so Nintendo would've likely lost more money.

Man, it would be hilarious if that's where Nintendo came up with the name for the Switch. Still, similar or no, the Switch's positioning in the market is different from that of the Wii U.

I'd argue that, if consoles were truly important to Nintendo, they would have found the money to do something to save it. After all, they had a ton of cash after the run-away success of the Wii and DS. Their investors would just have to accept the temporary losses -- unless they thought the idea itself was so terrible that it could not be salvaged, which would make me ask how the concept ever got off the ground in the first place.

I think the Wii U could have sold much better if they'd taken action early on by cutting by immediately cutting $100 off its asking price, removing the built-in gamepad, investing heavily in first/second party games, and paying third parties to bring games to their platform. No way would it ever sell PS4 numbers, but I bet it would have sold a bare minimum of 2x as much as it did.

Selling 2x as much wouldn't have been worth it because 1) double Wii U numbers are still very bad and 2) they would have lost billions.

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

Yep I agree! They are going to go full on with the switch! Just looking how technical those joycons are........ they won't easily give up on them! And plus! The "Wii" and "DS" are gone now!

Pocky Lover Boy!

Switch will sell between WiiU and Gamecube without à Price cut thé first year.

And between GameCube and N64 with à Price cut.

À little more liké +30M with an exclusive Pokemon Made for thé Switch using thé Switch powers enough( so no port for 3DS liké Pokémon Star would be )
