Forums - Gaming Discussion - Switch online requires Phone App? Why is no one talking about this?

It doesn't "require" the phone app. Its an added feature if you want to control a friends list or voice chat, etc. If you just jump on to play a game, then you just do that without the phone app. I'm not even sure how you pulled that it is required out of any of the information that has come out so far.

But why does that option even exist? Everything you can do on the phone is easier and faster done with the Switch itself.

That's like adding an option to play with the Switch while the joycons are heated up to 500°C. It's not mandatory, just an option for people who think having 500°C hot Joycons is more convenient.

I mean it is one way to effectively turn Switch into a DS3. You get a second screen handheld to do certain things while leaving your game screen active. Be playing Z:BoTW and also get some social gaming stuff set up and ready for when you switch to MK8. It has its utility, but it needs to be totally optional with all functions able to be used on the Switch itself.

Well I'm only good at multitasking using a single device like a smartphone or a PC or a PS4.

You still haven't told me what amazing feature there is on that second device that couldn't be done faster on the device you're already using.

It gives you options. So if you were to want or need to do something else on the screen then you can

What do you have to have happen on the Switch screen while looking at another screen on another device?

We also think it’s a very elegant solution because if you’ve taken your switch on the go, you’ve put yourself in a hotspot, you’re looking at get a quick match of Mario Kart in, to whip out some sort of bulky, gamer headset is a bit of a challenge.

How does this even make sense in his head?  Since headsets are apparently too bulky and challenging, how are you using the phone?  Is it just sitting on the table in front of you with audio coming out of the speakers?  Pretty sure putting a microphone on the Switch (like the Wii U gamepad) would be a much simpler solution.  Maybe bring a roll of duct tape around with you and tape it to your face?

Now that I think about it, this is a really great solution. You can use bluetooth with the device and you don't have to be tethered to a console at home to set up online functions, future gameplay sessions, etc. It really makes sense for the switch. Projared did an interview with Reggie, I suggest you check it out. This actually clicked with me after I thought about it.

Why would Switch need to be tethered to a console at home when Switch IS the console and you have it in your hand? That makes no sense.

I'm not sure I understand what's going on in here. This is mostly just negative speculation. Have they clearly come out and said the only option is the app to do all these things? I highly doubt it. It's like premature outrage. Wait for more information.

IF the app is the only way to do this stuff, I'd be mad.

IF the app weren't the only way to do this stuff, I'd be indifferent.

IF I had wheels, I'd be a bicycle.

And i dont understand how some people can éven Bégin to défend this, seriously, this is just a stupid systèm to have to use your phone.

Plus now i think about it... How will we do about headphones ? We wont éven bé able to have headphones for thé game + the chat online, welll have to choose.

How did they arrive to such an awful Idea ? Mindblowingly insane

Not on the Switch it's not. It does not, I repeat, DOES NOT have voice chat capabilities built into the system based on what Nintendo has said thus far.

It DOES NOT mattee what you say. It will have the capabilities. Just think about it

It's not what I'm saying, it's what Nintendo is saying.

“The smart phone app that we’re creating, that will be part of our online service, we believe is going to be a very compelling part of the overall proposition because that’s how you’ll voice chat, that’s how you’ll do your matchmaking, and create your lobby."

"Online lobby and voice chat

Our new dedicated smart device app will connect to Nintendo Switch and let you invite friends to play online, set play appointments, and chat with friends during online matches in compatible games─all from your smart device.

A free, limited version of this app will be available for download in summer 2017."

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

Because i am capable of rational thought instead of assuming they would leave everything out and MAKE you use your phone. Ok thats interesting
