Forums - Gaming Discussion - Switch online requires Phone App? Why is no one talking about this?

If it's an option to connect online through a smartphone to game/chat online on the Switch I think it's a great idea but if that's the only way to play online and voice chat then it's the most stupid thing mankind has ever done.

You'll be able to play online without it. You just won't have access to voice chat and online lobbies without it. At least, so far, that's what the little information they provided about their online services makes it all look like.

No, you know what? I just wait and see what will be delivered at the end. I am not jumping the gun. I just wait and see and decide when we will have all the information on the online services.

Thats the thing, NO one here is jumping the gun. We have official confirmation from nintendo themselves. Its not rocket science. They have the info on their website as it stands. They have made it very clear and easy to understand that to do those other things related to online gameplay you will need the app which in turn means you will need a smartphone.

Then in the interview with Reggie, he even goes as far as specify that its an elegant solution and even gave reasons (albeit stupid ones) for why they chose to go that route.

You are making it sound like people are just pulling this outta there ass, but official press releases through a website is the most efficient way to share such information and nintendo has provided that.

Now its one thing to say this is stupid and lets hope between now and say the fall when the app is available nintendo also bakes those features into the OS on the switch which will make this thing optional. Its another thing to just say no this can't be and everyone saying that it is is wrong simply becasue you also think it must be stupid, even when nintendo has so far made it clear thats what they are doing.

As it stads, there is simply more evidence that points to this being how nintendo plans on doing this than anything else.

isnt this just when you have the Switch portable. I mean obviusly at home its going to connect off your wifi

Could be worse. They could have simply left all of this out like on the Wii U.

It really needs to be cleared up asap I mean what does having access to online without the app actually allow. Without lobbies and matchmaking how would one be able to play Splatoon 2 for example. I'm hopeing this is purely an option for those taking the handheld part on the road and everything else works as normal though a router when you rin the house. Nintendo really need to step up and clear up something so important like this.

Well, then, so be it. I don't personally mind that. But it sucks for people who can't use it which are probably the minority.

Aren't lobbies and matchmaking part of the game, in Splatoon?

I don't see why that wouldn't be the case for Splatoon2.

From what I get from their messaging, so far, is that you get to organise game session from your phone, even if you're not using the Switch. You get to get invites from your online friends, letting you know they want to play with you. And stuff like that. And matchmaking will be tied to the regular online subscription. They really need to give an in-depth explanation of how their entire online services will work.

Yea that is kinda the feeling I get that's it's an an app such as the PlayStation app or Windows 10 Xbox app that allows you to message friends check out there screenshots browse the onlien shop/buy games digitally etc whislt not on the consoles themselves.

Problem is more so it just hasn't been comunicated very well and nothing mentioned about their online service in general.
