I'm doing a little research of gaming series/franchises. Will you guys help me out?

Tell me about your favorite game series. What are they? Which is the best or most quintessential game in the saga? Has it always been good, or did it veer off course at some point?

A few requests:

  • The series should have a minimum of three games.
  • Please describe in detail what you like about the series
  • Name as many as you like!

Thanks! Can you tell me more on what makes them so great? What about the mechanics, the gameplay, the production design, story, sound design, presentation, etc.?

Nice list! Can you tell me more about what makes each one uniquely great?

Resident Evil 0-4 5 & 6 are ok, but they're not resident evil games.
Castlevania
Metroid
Gears of War

"We all make choices, but in the end, our choices make us" - Andrew Ryan, Bioshock.

Suikoden - Classic jrpg style, good story, 108 different playable characters, all of them very different from each other, combos, cool magic system, in recent games the very formation of the characters changes the manner in which you play, whats not to like about this game?

Final Fantasy -I love that this franchise reinvents itself with each new entry that I don't ever feel tired of it, yet every new entry has an amazing world design, enemies, lore and music.

Dragon Quest - Classic jrpg in its purest form with Toriyama style animation? Im in.

The legend of Zelda - Read "Final fantasy".

Command & Conquer

Rest in Peace, best RTS franchise.

What was great - movies between missions, sidebar, decent story, good singleplayer campaign, decent multiplayer.
What was bad - EA happened and ruined everything.

Others in no particular order:
Age of Empires
Total War
Civilization
Fallout
The Elder Scrolls
GTA
Saints Row
The Witcher
Batman: Arkham
Red Faction
Assassin's Creed (until Brotherhood)

Fallout (3, 4, & New Vegas) -- I remember being kind of an anti-FPS elitist (like a lot of people here) where I was just into Japanese games. A friend of mine was full-on Call of Duty (the old kind) and I looked upon him with disdain. One day something made me pick up Fallout 3 for PC, though, and it changed my gaming preferences forever.

I'm someone who plays slowly and cautiously even when I don't need to do so. I like setting things up in a way where I take less damage or where I can do stealth kills. Not out of fear, or anything like that, but because it adds a layer to game-play. Using a tactical approach lets me kind of immerse myself in the game, as well, where I'm thinking like my character, whereas the gung-ho approach makes it feel like nothing more than a game. I like my imagination to be engaged along with my motor skills. Fallout lets me decide how I'm going to play.

That, and the freedom to explore, which I loved even back with old-school RPGs. The first time I played Fallout 4, I found out where I was supposed to go, then took off in the opposite direction. I love that.

I've always been a big fan of post-apocalyptic fiction, as well, both movies and books. The world-vibe I get from Fallout is one of my favorites. It's quirky but also bleak and gritty.
