Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo Switch Won't Support Netflix at Launch - Report

The people that this will be an issue for are people that have TVs with fewer HDMI ports. My TV only has 2, and has cable plugged into one, and the PS4 plugged into the other. If I had a Switch instead of the PS4 I wouldn't have access to Netlfix on my main TV.

Every device under the sun has netflix pre-installed, which is what makes this simultaneously not a big deal while also baffling.

Yeah that is the thing for me, I know I have Netflix on my TV baked in, but at the same time if I'm playing on the PS4 I'm happy that I can just pop back to the PS4 menu and jump into it there and control it with the DS4, or open up youtube next to that... or spotify, I think Nintendo should be giving people every reason to keep on their switch and integrate it into their lives so that people find the device crucial, not just a "this does games, for other things I turn that off and put it away"

Hey maybe they'll put it behind their paid online service and add it as a feature that you can access via the mobile phone app like voice chat instead of on the console itself, imagine, the ability to talk to friends and watch netflix on our phones!! would be great, a real look into the future.

My TV is from 2016 (XBR-43X800D), comes with integrated Netflix and Chromecast, among other apps. While some aspects of its menus can be laggy at times (it's an Android TV), those apps work pretty much flawlessly on it.

Not all TV's are equal sadly. Or are as modern as yours. Majority of TV's sold are cheaper models, which have corners cut. *Looks at Kogan.*
Sony is using a Mediatek chip in your TV derived from ARM A53 running under Android 6.
Certainly allot better than older Smart TV's. Still pretty garbage.

Eventually, you will no longer get updates or support and you might even loose some apps completely, give your TV another year and see how you go.

Plus, I would rather a dedicated box handle all the processing, less input lag that way.

It mighy not get endless updates, but I'm pretty sure Netflix, youtube and Chromecast are still going to work good two years from now.

In any case, the XBR 43X800D is an "entry level" High end TV. It is feature packed, even if it doesn't reach the highest recommanded specs for HRD 10 (which has a brightness of 1000 nits, it's at roughly 400).  My only regret with my purchase, is that Dynamic HDR is coming, and I don't think my TV will be updated to accept it. :/

And with this approach, out goes the idea of getting any apps on this device. Just gaming.

Putting out a game console without bloat. An efficient, fast OS that does its core purpose perfectly. Reduce need for overhead in CPU and RAM. Most people won't care as they have many other devices already too do this. Same reasons  to not include DVD or Blu-ray functionality when the discs we actually the same technology. Reasons.

That's a terrible excuse. The Switch is likely built from a fork of Android which itself has roots dating back to *nix.

Plus, you can load apps into memory on demand, so it doesn't take away resources whilst you are gaming. - The Xbox 360 did it. And did it with only 32Mb of Ram for the OS and still ended up with Netflix.
The Switch likely has more memory reserved for the OS than the Xbox 360.

On top of that you need to use a second device like a phone just for voice chat on the Switch, was it really that difficult for Nintendo to include a microphone built-in for a few cents and use a voice-chat app on the Switch?
Certainly better than having to juggle two devices at once.

As for Blu-Ray. I'm hoping for a revision of the Switch dock that includes a Blu-Ray drive one day.
The Tegra has the decode blocks to handle it, but I guess that is a misplaced hope, Nintendo hasn't really cared about what consumers want in regards to multimedia capabilities.

Yes there are older devices that run Netflix. But that is also ignoring whether Netflix sees value in creating yet another one off app.

Why would you juggle two devices? When you're playing you'd have Bluetooth headphones and the phone in your pocket.

I agree that I'd rather have the option  all on the one device. But Nintendo has decided to focus on its core purpose. I recognize there are reasons for this and the risks are minimal as most, not you, won't care about the lack of Netflix, etc.

Who needs 1000 different devices that support it. Is not just one device enough? Many TVs or set top boxes have it integrated anyway and the Switch does not support Bly-Ray either.

It doesn't matter how many other machines can access the content, simple fact of the matter is the switch could and should be one of those devices but at launch it isn't, so that means when you wanna hit up some netflix you need to power off your switch to do that (or undock it and play with that on the couch while netflixing on something else) but still, it does mean that a simple entertainment app isn't on the platform for no good reason.

To be fair. Netflix shouldn't need to make another one-off app. They should be able to port their Android app over and support both with the same fork.

Okay. So you need your phone to pair the Switch with to provide internet access. (Ugh.)

Then you need your phone to perform matchmaking.
You can't put your phone away as not all games have multiplayer matches that go for longer than a few minuits, one must assume you need to use your phone to deal with all of those logistics.

You also may be required to invite/uninvite people from your party, again requiring you to pull out your phone.

Then if you find someone who is annoying during the middle of a match and you wish to mute them, you again need to pull out your phone... And if you don't have headphones (I never carry mine) then you need to use your phone to talk into.

So yes. You will be required to juggle two devices... And this is only for the stuff we know about.

I do recognize that Nintendo decided to focus on other things.

However, they should not be above constructive criticism.

It was thanks to constructive criticism that got rid of the Kinect, lower price, more performance, removal of always-online DRM on the Xbox One remember and that benefitted everyone on the platform.

If Switch was the device to do all the same stuff you already do with all your other devices, why would you buy Switch for the stuff? I do think we eventually get apps like Netflix and Youtube, but at the start Nintendo makes it clear this is a games device you buy to access the games and not the stuff you use your 50€ tablet for - besides, as Switch apparently isn't coming with a mobile network version, you'd have to carry your mobile phone with you anyway to watch Netflix.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

Sometimes I wonder if Nintendo's OS division is like 5 people total. Some people are saying there is no web browser either. 3DS and Wii U had this functionality already and they've been working on Switch/NX for like 2 years now and they're using a standard ARM + Nvidia Tegra setup here ... like how are they so slow in doing things?

They should just allow your smartphone OS (iOS or Android) to be mirrored to the Switch and let you access all your smartphone apps/content through your Switch that way as I mentioned above. If you have to use if for voice chat and matchmaking, just go the whole 9 yards.

I hope and believe it will have a web browser. WiiU still has the best browser in the business, in my opinion. It is beginning to show its age, though.

Or be in one of those rare places which offers free wifi.

But again, Switch doing what other things does wouldn't make it a device to purchase, say when it comes to the X1 Vs PS4, people say that the X1 is less appealing because it has less power and doesn't feature it's own exclusive software, obviously in the case of the switch it would have a fantastic developer making that exclusive software which you can only play on the Switch (Zelda on the Wii-u) But yeah, you would have the device as the place to go for Nintendo games over just your normal tablet for netflix and other free entertainment apps.

All I'm saying is Nintendo should not be making a person make the choice when they reach for a device of "do I pick up the cheap tablet, or my switch" they shouldn't put their games up against the unnessessary competition of something like netflix and youtube when it doesn't have to be there, they should have it so if a person is sitting down for tablet entertainment they pick up the Switch without question of what they want to do.... sure they might just use it to watch Netflix for an hour... or they might see a game on the E-Shop they wanted to buy, buy that, play it, it's the reason why the ps4/X1 want to be all in one devices, you sit at them for one thing, but you are in their closed environment then, if you want to buy spotify on the ps4 you need to go via Sonys psn store to get time for it, where they are free to advertise you games galore to tempt you into giving them more money.

To say that Nintendo has a strategy which invites putting their device down and not being the go to place for recreation time, is saying they are going with a strategy which gifts away free advertising to their rivals again... for the sake of an app which you can install on the damn Ouya lol.
