Forums - Gaming Discussion - Nintendo Switch Selling Out Due To Intentionally Low Stock? Think Again

I just can't take this. Yes, he is trying to make some point somewhere down the line, but leading up to that point he is working with such bad numbers that I stopped before the halfway point. The Wii U did not sell through just north of 3m units in its first two months.

I dont think he was entirely wrong about that (but it does say shipped);

"From the Wii U's launch till December 31, 2012, Nintendo reported that 3.06 million consoles and 11.69 million software units had been shipped worldwide."

out of stock sounds better than over stock in the business perspective...

This is the company that is notorious for understocked their products to create artificial demand. Anybody thinking that they won't understock their first set of preorders is kidding them selfs.

PS4 sold 1 million in less than 24 hours in the USA alone. No way where they understocking it. They sold every unit they could make

The PS4 sold out of preorders several times before its launch. That's because retailers halt preorders when they have yet to secure a bigger allocation of the product. This process works in steps. Nothing different is happening with Switch at this point.

And people really need to be less biased in these things. When Nintendo sells out, it's quickly said that it's low stock to create artificial demand. But when Sony sells out, it's because the product is amazing and everything that could be made is selling.

After its launch month, we will know for sure. But I wouln't defend Nintendo on this one. Given how widespread the criticism has become, even if unfair, should still preasure Nintendo into making sure the stock is there.

He is wrong, because 3.06m were sold to retailers, not sold through.

True, but it's something thats easy to make a mistake on at first glance. He could of proof read his facts a little better on that instance, so he did mess up a bit.

Wow, that's one sad video. First his numbers for Wii U sales are off, secondly he refuses to believe that Nintendo would create artificial demand when that's exactly what they did with the NES Classic. Thirdly he starts blaming Sony for PS2 memory card shortages as if that shortage would actually help sell more consoles? How does not being able to save your game increase the demand of your console? This guy isn't very bright.

Now whether or not Nintendo is creating artificial demand for the Switch? I highly doubt that, There are millions of Nintendo fans that can't buy this console fast enough. No one should be surprised there.

Seriously that's his argument? rofl

When the COO of Gamestop tells you that Nintendo is intentionally understocking the Wii and you're still denying it..

Also if you followed the amiibo craze you'd know how brilliant Nintendo handled that.

Another factor that probably wasn't as bad back in 2012 is scalpers ordering only on the basis of reselling on at a profit or simply returning if no potential profit.

I do remember there was a big issue with overstock on wii u and maybe that too was caused by pre-orders being cancelled.

It will be interesting to see how this all works out in the end but that probably won't be until May until we start getting the full picture. I've already seen quite a few comments about people pre-ordering the Switch but its looking like they will cancel before shipment but again this is from a UK perspective.

That is your argument? A COO saying that he thinks that Nintendo did that, but then the aftermath is clearly proving him wrong because the Wii was produced at almost twice the rate of the PS2 and still sold out? You can't intentionally understock by producing and selling at a much higher rate than anything that came before it.

I was waiting for someone to fall into the Wii trap. Didn't expect it to be you though.

You sure can lol...Why couldn't they? If they can evaluate the demand correctly and accurately they can both sell a lot of units as well as ship just a little below demand to keep that hard-to-find status. Many shipments of fewer units allows to gauge that easily.

I honestly can't believe people are actually denying that Nintendo has been creating artificial scarcity especially since they've been doing it forever (it goes back to the NES era). And I also don't understand why people see this as an attack to Nintendo. I think it's a brilliant strategy that few companies could pull off as well.

But the first allocation of Switch being sold out doesn't mean anything yet.

Ok, so basically new consoles sell out of their initial stock? Intentional or not it really doesn't matter.

Exactly.
