Forums - Gaming Discussion - Adjusted for inflation, Switch costs the same as launch as Wii (in US)

Well it is a phone and has more functions that a gaming console....and they upgrade yearly in contracts and don't pay full price for these phones. Those are just 2 differences with no thought to be honest.

I dont mean contract peopel that sit one phone for 2/3 years.

I mean the types that pay 1000 out of pocket to get the newest shinest phone each year.

Are there millions of that type of person? Does that type of person buy video game consoles? Are those types of people complaining about the price? If not, then how is your point relevant?

The difference is that the Wii was $150 cheaper than the competition and came with a pack in game. This time around the Switch costs just as much as the other systems, and doesn't come with a free game. After you factor in a free Uncharted 4, the PS4 is $240. So Nintendo is asking $300 for old outdated tech, when Sony and MS are asking $240 for current gen tech.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves here.

Depends the PS4 pro is pretty modern but also costs  €400 or €380.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

i have never met anyone who does that, I'd say like 99% of people either go the subsidized route or pay out of pocket for the lower end $100-200 phones.

Very few people are paying $1000 upfront for a phone.

^ this.

I keep hearing it on the internet, "yet people are fine spending 1000$ on a new phone every other year".

I have met only 1 single person like that, who was like the most crazed apple fanboy ever (and rich).

Most people simply dont do it like that.

No one had to adjust for inflation when the Wii's price was revealed.

Actually we did anyway.

By comparison to other console launches adjusting for inflation, the Wii was the cheapest entry price point Nintendo ever had.

You missed the point I was making. People weren't so bothered by the Wii's launch price that they made threads trying to justify it by comparing its price to what came before through inflation. Inflation doesn't matter. Perception does.

Yeah, and the NES is like $600.

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

Inflation or not, the Switch is still expensive, but I can see a pricecut happening, unlike the Wii U for some reason

[3DS] Winter Playtimes [Wii U]

So the Wii launched in 2006 at $250. Not sure if it came with a nuncheck. And came bundled with Wii Sports and one Wii remote.

Funny - $300 in todays US dollars just about *exactly* equals $250 in 2006 dollars.

http://www.dollartimes.com/inflation/inflation.php?amount=250&year=2006

You don't get a packed in game with Switch, but you technically have the equivalent of 2 wii remotes in the joycons. It just seems funny that people are calling the Switch overpriced when in real terms it's priced nearly as well as the Wii was in the first place.

Of course - PS4 and X1 are far more price-competitive than PS3 and 360 were in this era, but likely really because PS4/X1 have been out much longer.

Wii launced with a game and 2 "controllers" (Wii Remote and Nunchuck).  It was cheap enough to be a second console for people who already bought a PS3 or Xbox 360.  The Switch launches without a game,  with 2 controllers and with a subscription fee for online play, so even when adjusted for inflation, it is more expensive than the Wii.

When ignoring inflation, the Switch is the most expensive home console Nintendo has released (tied with Wii U, and we all know how poorly that sold).  It is the most expensive handheld Nintendo has released.  It is also more expensive then their competition.

Historically, the Nintendo consoles that sold well launched at either $199.99 or $249.99.

Honestly, I think the Switch is the overpriced PS3 of this generation.

I expect to see a price drop within 4 months (like the 3DS), unless Nintendo just wants to leave it to die while they focus on mobile (where all of the casual gamers are anyway).

With the tech that's in the switch, it's a decent price. However, the accessories are adding at least 15$ to the price depending on what you need.

Was the Wii worth the $250?
