Good art, interesting story and characters. Some examples: See Gundam series, Studio Ghibli, Escaflowne, Evangelion, X1999, Tokyo Babylon, Death Note, Code Geass, Martian Successor Nadesico (though the art sucks), Rayearth OVA, Vampire Hunter D, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles, ect.

I thought 2016 was a great year for anime.

Besides the HIGHLY overrated Re Zero, I loved My Hero Academy; Erased was amazing, and I LOVED the Sinbad spinoff from Magi.
