This is my first thread, so a brief intro serves me best. I am a 16 year old (my birthday is on January 17, so I'm either 15 or 16 depending on your time zone lol) out of Vancouver, but I'm of Indian background and also born in New Delhi. My first console was a PS2 back in 2007 and have been into gaming ever since. 

So lets start with the topic. I think the 3DS will get the next mainline Pokemon game to end Generation 7, and I have a few reasons to support the prediction.

1) Pokemon games have never switched (no pun intended) consoles mid-generation. 

2)  It has happened before that a pokemon game came out after the successing handeld has released already. Pokemon emerald came out 6 months after the DS released, and Pokemon black 2 and white 2 came out a year-and-a-half after the 3DS released. 60 million consoles sold is no small feat, and Nintendo may want to the  do a final cash-in just like they did with Black 2 and white 2 for the DS.

3) We didn't see a pokemon game for the switch during the presentation. Yeah, they could show it later, but why wouldn't they show it in the first place? Pokemon has a massive fanbase, and a lot more people would've went all-in on the Switch if the Pokemon had been shown. I doubt Pokemon switch exists at this moment. If you don't think a new pokemon game can't be revealed because Sun/moon just released, think back to XY reveal, which was also a January12th.

4) The 3DS is still being supported at least thru 2017. This is likely because of Nintendo not wanting to be in financial trouble, just incase the Switch fails. DQVII, Yoshi, Ever oasis, and pikmin are still left come out. Another Pokemon game will be guaranteed to sell great. I understand Reggie's comments on 3DS being alonside Switch, even though they will most likely turn out  to be lies. If Switch succeeds, which it most likely will IMO, 3DS will be dropped like a rock instantly, and Pokemon Switch will come into fruition for fall 2018.

I could see a November 2017 release date.

But these are just my predictions. Post your take on this.

Personally, I believe they will either make it for the 3DS and Switch or Switch only.

Scenario 1: They want to get extra units from the 3DS, but desire to introduce more games for the switch at the same time. What do you do? Make a game for each one. Watch as the amount of units sold becomes higher than Greece's GDP.

Scenario 2: The 3DS clearly limited Sun/Moon, so the Switch will take the spotlight now. Sun/Moon will still be supported on the 3DS, and will be able to interact with the sequels. However, we will see a highly improved Pokemon game that'll shine with much better hardware. HD Pokemon people, come on.

Looking at those sales numbers on Sun/moon, they would be crazy not to.

That's not really bold. I don't think there is any reason to not release it for the 3DS.

Hopefulyl not, just because that the Switch would greatly benefit of having the Pokemon game all to itself.But I also see this happening, so its possible.

Switch only or 3DS/Switch double release. It'd be really shocking that Nintendo didn't take advantage of the Pokemon franchise to sell more Switch units.

They need the next Pokemon to be exclusive to the switch, so they can sell the system.

yeah another 3ds pokemon looks very possible.

in either possibilities, next handheld can be if ever 2 years away. or Holidays 2018.

I'm so ready to move on from the 3DS. Just let it die already.
