I love both, I hope they make 2 Mario games consisting of each style on Nintendo Switch. I could see the 3D world style taking over the slot of the modern 2D Mario games (especially if Mario Maker comes at some point).

I agree about the identity part, but you can't just say that course-clear levels are better game design in general. That's a matter of taste. I agree that the course-clear Mario games excel at what they are trying to do, but I am pretty sure I wouldn't have such fond memories of SM64 if it had linear levels with flagpoles. |
Of course I can. It doesn't matter if it's a matter is it's a matter of taste. Better is a subjective word. Using it in any context already implies taste.
Linear doesn't mean flagpoles. SMB2/3/World all had no flagpoles. It would have still been stars. You'd just get one per level, and there'd be way more unique levels instead of a few recycled ones, and it would actually have tight level design that actually utilizes interesting platforming gimmicks in challenging and satisfying ways that don't overstay their welcome. But, you know.
And I'm 100% sure you would. Mario 64 wasn't memorable because it had good level design – it was memorable because it was one of the first games that did traversal in a 3-D world well. As long as it did that, you would've been blown away by anything, including something linear. Super Mario World, and people loved that, was what came before it, so the expectation was pretty straightforward.
I like both. First choice has gown on me, but I can't pick one.

BasilZero said: Old Super Mario Bros ruined the traditional 2D style after they made way too many games in the sub series. They should have stopped after the DS and Wii games - only reason why they made the WiiU and 3DS ones were because they thought they could repeat the same success but were proven wrong when the output of sales wasnt the same. They should imo instead of focusing on one type of Mario game, should focus on releasing 3D sandbox now, then a 2D one, and then a 3D World/Land type (or mix it up with something new) rather than releasing same types in a row. |
NSMB2 sold successfully in all sense of the word. NSMBU did as well... for a game on the Wii U. However, and this goes along with your last point, they need to handle the regulation of Marios in general better.
OT: Sandbox + Galaxy. That's the simplest answer for me.
I've played all the Mario games, and 64 always left the biggest impression on me. To those saying that the sandbox games (64/Sunshine, parts of Galaxy) don't have any objective, that's the whole point of the various stars you're collecting. Each has an objective in order to get it. You explore to figure it out, you platform plenty to get to it or collect what you need, etc. And I appreciate that there's no time limit, so you can do it at your own pace. Unlike in the linear Mario games where you're at the behest of the clock at all times and must keep moving forward and you can't ever relax. Those games (2D Mario, 3D Land, 3D World, and parts of Galaxy 1/2) are amazing and fun and I appreciate the diverse levels and the way each new level throws new elements at you. However, I think they lack the replayability and depth of the sandbox games. Mario's movements are so fast and fluid and awesome that it's a shame when you don't really have the time (or space) to enjoy them fully. Also, the Galaxy games are kind of halfway between the two camps, imo. They don't have a time limit and some of the galaxies are bigger and allow you to explore a bit more. But they're also largely linear levels, and often times you couldn't go backwards once you'd been launched forward. So while I enjoy all the Mario games, I'll take the true sandbox style of 64/Sunshine over any of the others, and that's why I'm as hyped for Mario Odyssey as I've been for any Mario game since the launch of the original Galaxy.
Upcoming Games To Get
Definite: Kirby Star Allies (Switch), Mario Tennis Aces (Switch), Fire Emblem (Switch), Yoshi (Switch), Pokemon (Switch), Kingdom Hearts 3 (PS4), Monster Hunter World (PS4)
Considering: Fe (Switch), Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze (Switch), The World Ends With You (Switch), Ys VIII (Switch), Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition (PS4), Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Remix (PS4), The Last Guardian (PS4), Shadow of the Colossus HD (PS4), Anthem (PS4), Shenmue 3 (PS4), WiLD (PS4)
I like both styles, and slightly prefer the course based Marios.
I like both of them, but I like the openness of Mario 64 and Sunshine. I really enjoyed exploring the different stages and all the different objectives set in each of them. They feel more interesting than more linear style 3D Mario games.

None of them? 3d Land was bad, 3d World was good (in co-op), I dropped Sunshine after ~5 hours, never played M64, Galaxy 1-2.
