This image has been floating around for the past few days and it seems like Nintendo considers that there are two types of 3D Mario games.

With that in mind, do you prefer the sandbox levels of Super Mario 64 and Sunshine (Sandbox Style 3D) or the course based levels of 3D World and Galaxy (Course Clear 3D)? This is NOT the thread to debate this classification, if you would like to do so then there is already another thread for that.

Personally I am quite divided, but if I had to choose I would probably give it to Course Clear 3D. I grew up playing 2D Mario games and Super Mario Galaxy/Super Mario 3D World are the closest games in strucure to 2D Mario, ultimately nostalgia wins out for me. They're all excellent games though so you can't go wrong either way, what do you guys think?

Third choice:

Galaxy 1, Galaxy 2, Mario 64 and Mario Odyssey. I call it... The True 3d Mario group

Nintendo confirmation that 3D World is not the same 3D as 64.

And before people mention Galaxy, Galaxy is a classic.

Rip sunshine?

OT: I like 3D Land the most. But haven't played a Sandbox type since 64 DS, so I'd like to have more of those.

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

Without a doubt the one that gave us the Galaxy and Land series, the only ones with actually great gameplay.

Sunshine never felt like a Mario game to me... Cleaning up other people's shit around the street... Boringggg

Also Voice Acting

I love all of them so either works for me.

I do tend to replay the course clear more than sandbox style tho.

3rd choice: Both?

Super Mario World is awesome.
Super Mario 64, despite being horribly overrated, is still awesome.
Galaxy 1/2 are awesome.
Super Mario 3D world is awesome.

The idea that only "true 3d bla bla Mario games" are the good ones only makes it hard for me to take those opinions seriously. Both styles can work and be great.

Updated the poll.

They are all great games, but I would go with the course based games as there is less repetition. It can be a bit tedious in the open games walking between levels, or having to get to a similar part of the same level to do different tasks.
