Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Mario Odyssey is successor Mario 64 and Mario Sunshine, not to Galaxy and 3D Land/World

Strange picture.

If that's from Nintendo, then they don't know Galaxy and 3D World are fundamentally different and can't be grouped together as such. Even though the Galaxies are not as open as 64 and Sunshine, they have more in common with those than with 3D Land/World.

Anyway, regardless of my ramblings, both this one here and the ones where I'm bashing the Switch, Odyssey returning to the 64 style is great and what I've been wanting for decades now. FLUDD ruined Sunshine, so I've been waiting for a real "Mario 128" ever since. The realistic style of some areas are still a little weird to me, but I'm interested to see how this game progresses. Who knows, might even get a Switch for it in a couple of years!

I guess that will shut up those people claiming 3D world is the same as Mario 64.

The only thing that seems to connect Galaxy and 3D World is that theres a multiplayer option. Miyamoto did call the later games from Galaxy - 3D World more casual Mario games though. So its cool to see them make a more core Mario game.

What connects Galaxy and 3D World are games that are liners, without open sandbox world for exploring, compared to SM64, SMS and Mario Odyssey.

Disagree, both Galaxy and 3D Land/World are games that are linear, without open sandbox world for exploring, compared to SM64, SMS and now to Mario Odyssey.

I just cant get excited about the system, ive not seen one game that really makes me exicted to get one apart from Xenoblade2, i think im going to sit this one out.

SM Galaxy is way closer to SM N64 than 3d World though in my opinion, the only difference is that the Galaxy games are more linear than Super Mario 64. But the gameplay is largely the same. Those games are full 3d while the 3 world series has more resamblence with the mario bros series. It is basically super mario bros in 2.5D. In Super Mario galaxy you also need to visit worlds multiple times to collect everything and for every star you have to complete a different objective.

Not true tbh, Galaxy or at least the first game has a hub yes but it's far closer to 3DW, each level in all of these games is a set linear affair with little deviation, 64 and Sunshine however have a sandbox like approach where you're just dropped into the world and do things as you like.

it's far closer in actual objectives and collecting stuff than 3d world which in my opinion is just a glorified 2.5d mario bros. It's still a good game, but everything screams mario bros from that game instead of 3d mario. The galaxy games where not like Super Mario Bros at all and where full 3d mario's and contained vastly complex worlds like SM64.
