Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Mario Odyssey is successor Mario 64 and Mario Sunshine, not to Galaxy and 3D Land/World

I'm glad they're giving it another shot with this style just because it's been a while.

That said, I really did not like Mario Sunshine, it did not "click" or ever feel right to me, hopefully this is done a lot better than that and learns some things from the Galaxy/3D World games.

Not enough platforming in Sunshine IMO. Exploration in a Mario platformer is OK, but once you go past Mario 64 levels of exploration you get into dangerous territory I think.

I've been saying for years Nintendo should make a modern successor to Mario 64, glad to see they're finally acknowledging my genius suggestions and repeated angry letters attached to bricks thrown through the windows of Tokyo EAD. :D

Is this a Mario 64 successor or Mario Sunshine successor, because I feel those two are very different games.

I doubt it will be full on Mario 64 styled where you can get any star in any order you chose but, i'll take that. At least no Fludd or any of that nonsense the hat looks way better. Also Sunshine felt unfinished and had 1/2 the amount of levels Mario 64 had. So it will be easy to surpass Sunshine in quality lmao.

The game (unlike the Switch imo) looks amazing can't wait.

wow so they are officially recognizing 2 separate Mario 3D experiences!

TBH I thought 3D Land and 3DWorld to be different but not Galaxy!

In Nintendo terms I preferred Galaxy/World to 64/Sunshine

Switch!!!

And btw next will truly be Mario Universe - to follow up on "Space" titles vs "Journey"

Switch!!!

The only thing that seems to connect Galaxy and 3D World is that theres a multiplayer option. Miyamoto did call the later games from Galaxy - 3D World more casual Mario games though. So its cool to see them make a more core Mario game.

Successor to sandbox, more open world, with more exploring type of Mario game, not to Galaxy and Land/World.

Oh yeah, baby! I prefer Super Mario Bros. to the 3D games but I still greatly enjoy them. I didn't like 3D Land / World that much because it seemed to me that they gave up a lot of the strong points of 3D games to make them more accessible but ultimately resulted in games that just felt dumbed down.

If you're gonna make a 3D Mario make a real one and play to the strengths of the genre. (Just give me Super Mario Bros. Switch at some point please.)
