Forums - Gaming Discussion - since when did graphics > gameplay?

When are people going to get it through their heads that we don't have to choose between good graphics and good gameplay?

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

As long as gaming has existed, people have wanted better graphics, be it popping quarters in the arcade, trading sprites for polygons, or strapping on a VR headset on your head.

Playstation: 105 million
N64: 33 million

Playstation 2: 158 million
Gamecube: 22 million

Playstation 3: 87 million
Wii: 101 million

Playstation 4: 50 million
Wii U: 14 million

These are sales since Sony and Nintendo have started competing. Many seem to want to forget that the N64 and Gamecube were actually as powerful, if not more powerful than the competition. Even the NES and SNES were more powerful than other options on the market. The N64 didn't outsell the PS with better graphics. The gamecube didn't outsell the PS2 with better graphics. The PS3 didn't outsell the Wii with better graphics. It has always been about a mixture of power, gameplay, and value. Which is why it blows my mind that this narrative seemingly is coming solely from the Nintendo crowd that somehow Nintendo has been offering this somehow clearly superior gameplay option. Consumers have strongly disagreed with this narrative for decades even when Nintendo had power behind their consoles.

I blame IMAX.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Gameplay and artstyle are purely subjective. Technical specs are objective. 60fps is objectively better than 30fps, just like 4k is objectively better than 1080p

Not an issue for me, which is why I don't mind 1080 to 900 or even 720

Would be nice to have, but not a must

While I agree with the general statement, I find that framerate is linked more to gameplay than graphics. The feel of a game at 60 fps is a lot nicer than 30.

I made a promise to myself that I'd quote the first person who I 96.5% agreed with on this thread, so I did.

So you think good graphics = 4k+120fps?

Or was that just for dramatic effect? And you can care about gameplay from a trailer?

framerate = gameplay
resolution is a natural evolution of televisions and people wanting content for it.

The Wii proved a concept can outsell graphics. The WiiU and possibly the Switch will prove bad concepts wont.

Also the DS > PSP in sales an 3DS > PSVita in sales so yes graphics have not taken over at all.
