money-grubbingadjective

uk /ˈmʌn.iˌɡrʌb.ɪŋ/ us /ˈmʌn.iˌɡrʌb.ɪŋ/ disapproving

Someone who is money-grubbing has money as their main interest and does anything possible to get a lot of it.

I think it's a UK / US english thing, never heard anyone say money-grubbing here before in uk. Google tells me it's the other way round in the US so looks like you've taught me something.

You are welcome for the education. Its like when I learned that they still put the U in certain words like colour or armour. Just little things, but still informative.

The question is tho, which gives you the most bang for your buck?...

Sony.

Vita Launch Prices of $250 and $299, memory card prices: 4GB – $24.99, 8GB – $39.99, 16GB – $69.99, 32 GB – $119.99
PS3 Launch

You could also argue about PS4Pro and PSVR

Sorry I disagree with that.

Nintendo see anything recent

Microsoft: Introduced Xbox Live, tried to put on PC.

All three have done bullshit.

I was angry at the Switch reveal and was going to make some angry thread, but after thinking about it all 3 console makers do some pretty serious cash grabs. So I thought it would be a fun conversation to see which one people think is the most money grubbing.

Here's my thoughts.

1. Nintendo. They always go after you with underpowered consoles but with high prices and outrageous prices on peripherals and their first party games prices almost never go down. Its a recipe for a money grubbing company. Then factor in pay to play online and 'free' games that aren't free and disappear after a month and you got my choice for number 1.

2. Sony.  They increased the price on their Pay to Play online service and have had some pretty shady months of games on PS+. Not to mention not introducing a new controller for PSVR, and instead offering a high end bundle for PSVR that includes stuff that has been released years ago. Not having BC but instead offering a streaming service where you don't own games and rereleasing PS2 games and reselling them at high prices puts them in the number 2 slot for me.

3. Microsoft. They are the king of Pay to Play with XBL. They even had several services hidden behind the paywall like Netflix. And while I appreciate the design lab, to me its a cash grab to sell color controllers at higher prices. Not to mention GWG didn't happen until years later after when PS+ was introduced with their games initiative. To be fair they did give away the 360 games as full ownership and they do offer BC with Xbox One but still that was a big time difference where they tried to make XBL more 'valuable' than it really was.

What about you? Who is the most money grubbing console maker?

I agree with your opinion on Nintendo’s first party prices policies, 100%. As a game collector, I have to agree with you, Nintendo are keeping prices way too high comparing to Sony and Microsoft. And I think that they do this in purpose, so in the long run, they can be seen by us,  as a gaming legacy brand.

Let's find the one device to prove a point and ignore the rest. 3ds launched at the exact same price with significantly inferior hardware. In other words, if anything $250 for a vita was a fantastic price. It most certainly gave you bang for your buck.

As for the memory cards, most bundles came with a 4 or 8gb card. And that's the only thing that has been expensive.

So that's some serious cherry picking. Can't say I agree with that.

This was at launch, and yes it is picking out the faults, the device could have easily used SD cards which everyone had, but no it didn't. Also I am showcasing all three are horid, don't take offense because I picked one of your favorites and showcased it.

Also the launch bundle that came 4GB was the 3G $299 bundle. Do not remember single launch bundle for 249.99 that came with memory card.

Oh lets not forget all sole propertier sony cards over the years in general.

Are you going to argue with me the technology inside nintendo devices deserves the cost as well? Or MIcrosoft introduction of all those features justified the online? All three fanbase can do that.

Its hard to argue. In fact you usually want to buy all Nintendo games brand new and pay full retail because the runs are usually limited and there won't be any price markdowns. Games will usually just be here, or not here. Pikmin 3, Bayo 2 and others were commanding high prices. Some of it was alleviated with Nintendo Selects, and the eshop made it so that you more likely than not had a shot at getting the games, but for video game collectors, you really have your ears pinned back by Nintendo.

All of them are in it for money, what do you expect? Why do you think Sony added $10 to trying to play online on PS+ or charge that much for Vita memory cards or even have a $599 console be a thing? Why do you think Microsoft even bothered to charge Xbox Live Gold in the first place? Why do you think Nintendo charges old games at their prices on VC? Money!!!

They are all businesses first. Its up to you whether or not the things they're charging are worth it for your experience as a gamer.

Personally, I don't like everything Nintendo charges (or any company in that matter), but I can at least trust what they produce so I don't mind that much. I've broken a few PS2 controllers during the time I was playing the PS2 and yet my original GameCube controller (old and worn) still works like it originally did over 14 years ago. I feared at times of my OG Xbox 360 overheating and even its disc slot is sometimes not working. But my Game Boy Advance still works as well my N64. Say what you want about Nintendo, but dammit their hardware are pretty good at being stable even after years of wear and tear. And the games, to me, are worth it. I would preorder Smash, Pokémon, Mario, and Zelda (and, maybe, Splatoon) if they ever produce future installments if I wish because I can trust those games being great. I can't say that for many other series that I'm interested in. Again, this is a personal opinion.
