Forums - Nintendo Discussion - DF: Mario Odyssey , Splatoon 2 runs at 720p + Zelda analysis

DF also said that Splatoon and Mario are games in development and not finished games, so if are now 720p that doesn't mean they will be launched at 720.

I hope Splat 2 runs at 900p-1080p docked when its done. I get the feeling these games are being rushed out though.

If they launch at 720p, what will the undocked resolution be? I doubt Nintendo will go below 720p after setting it as their baseline on Wii U. Maybe Splatoon 2 and Odyssey don't even use the dock's extra power? That would be very disappointing and just plain perplexing if true.

I think 540p resolution games are an option for Switch portable mode for games that really push the system. Nvidia upscaling is pretty good and will do decent job of it. Although saying that 540p is a better fit for a baseline for a game upscaled to 1080p.

Very surprised that the reveal didn't have games in a better state of development. Many people have expressed surprise at how poor some games look across the web. Not the art style but the low resolution and frame rate. If they do improve the resolution of these games for release they have done a lot of damage by showing these early builds.

It seems that the WiiU and Switch version of Zelda only differ in resolution and environmental sound effects.

As outlined by Nintendo in a statement to IGN, the Switch version will render in 900p on a TV, while its Wii U counterpart is only 720p.
The Switch version will also feature "higher-quality environmental sounds", Nintendo stated. "As a result, the sound of steps, water, grass, etc. are more realistic and enhance the game's Open-Air feel."
Beyond that, the only differences are minimal, such as different button icons and the fact that only the Switch version will launch with Special and Master Editions containing bonus physical collectibles.

So no differences in detail or draw distance I guess. More stable 30fps.
Both versions will have a framerate of 30fps. That said, we noticed the Wii U version frequently struggled to hit that goal during its most recent E3 demo.

I guess the Switch isn't that more powerful than the WiiU if that's the only difference in docked mode. Can it even keep up with the WiiU undocked?

DF said that demo of Splatoon 2 in portable mode is also 720p and that work at locked 60 fps, same like dock mode, my guess is that they showed portable version of game in docked mode also and that actually they still didnt bump resolution for docked mode.

The thing that I don't get is why is it that Mario Kart 8 is able to jump from 720p on the Wii U to 1080p on the Switch, but Zelda can't do the same?

Same with Splatoon 2, it looks a lot similar graphically to Splatoon 1 imo, though a bit better in some areas so I don't know why that wouldn't be at 1080p.  It also doesn't look like the type of game to me that would be a big advanced game for the system to run either, but who knows.

I'm gonna hope that since Splatoon 2 and Super Mario Odyssey are a while away from launch still that they can get the resolutions up to 1080p by then. Maybe with more time they could have brought Zelda up to 1080p but since it's a launch title they can't.

To be fair Zelda BotW is definitely much more demanding game than MK8, huge open and live world with physics, and we saw that Wii U is struggling with game.

I definatly not expecting that on launch will be 720p in dock mode, beacuse if they bumped resolution of Zelda and MK8 there is no reason that Splatoon2 work at same resolution in portable and docked mode.

I expecting that every Nintendo game will run at 720p in portable mode and 900p/1080p in docked mode.

it will be glorious no matter what resolution it is
