Forums - Nintendo Discussion - This is what will make the Switch a hit, the JoyCon

It may be a more advanced version of the Wii-mote (and a less confortable one by the looks of things), but people just don't care about that stuff anymore. The Wii-mote was something new, Joy-Cons don't really do anything that's really new. They are going to be a non-factor either way, not going to be taken advantage of or a major selling point, and turn out to be a waste of R&D.

But why should it be something new? It's something that resonated extremely well, so what's the problem with going with something similar?

That's neat and all, but I really don't want more games, like Star Fox Zero, that are utterly ruined by shitty, forced gimmick motion controls. I sincerely hope that we aren't just going back to Wii with this. I liked Wii more than Wii U, because it had more games. But Wii U had the advantage of MOST games not having forced motion controls. It just so happened that something like SFZ, did.

It honestly kind of seems to me like we're just going back to motion controls being the thing devs feel like they "have to use" when making games for Nintendo's console again. And if that's the case, that sucks.

The jiy cons are the new gimmick that drove up the price. Like the 3d of the 3ds, or the gamepas of the WiiU, it will be barely used and ultimately you ll think : "they should have released a more classic system to sell it much cheaper"

The joy cons are what willmake the switch fail

If you want a classic system, buy a classic system. This is not a classic system and that's good.

nintendo could have done something that isn't classic without putting a lot of expensive useless stuffs in it.

The basic concept of the Switch, being a handheld and a home console would have been enough. They should, no joycons etc, you put the console in the dock, you take out a pro controller, that's done.

The reality is that Nintendo is out of ideas when it's come to games, it's easier for them to put a gimmick that will cost a lot of money to the consumer, and then build small games like ARMS and 1.2 switch, that cost nothing to make but will make a lot of money.

Rather than the other option of making games like Zelda, AAA games with a big budget and high financial risks that needs a lot of works and talent to make it work.

They don't have to be, but then they also aren't going to be the thing "that makes the Switch a hit", because they won't be the thing that will attract an audience.

I loved the concept. But don't think that boring hardware is bad while a bunch of new stuff is good. PS2 was just a "boring" device and it still sold 160M. Games sell consoles. Not hardware.

Depends in the case of Sony consoles yes. But the Wii did partially sell great because of the innovative hardware. In the end marketing and games sell a system otherwise the gap Xone between PS4 would be way smaller. The stronger hardware of the PS4 also allowed third party games to run better on the device surely that helped. Nothing wrong with boring hardware though.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

IF the Switch is a "hit" it will be because people are swapping out their 3DS for them. It will certainly not be because of the same rudimentary motion controls they've been offering since 2006.

The issue the Switch may run into is that they haven't done much to convince anyone who doesn't already want a Nintendo system to buy a Switch. And the price is going to make it a difficult sell as a handheld.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

It's definitely innovative in the way Nintendo wants, but are features that I don't really care about to be honest

Would rather limit these features and drop the price..

But there`s an important point you just mentioned. Price. You may think it`s expensive, but, consumer wise, the price itself doesn`t matter. If the person seems value to it, they are going to pay for it, unless they just can`t pay it in anyway.

Sometimes trying to go cheap could have hurted more than helped.

Price ALWAYS matters.

Price is a major reason PS4 pulled ahead at the get-go.

Price is a major reason PS3 had such a rough start.

Price is a major reason the 3DS sells well.

Price is always in the top three most important features of a platform. And right now, you've got a handheld-hybrid at the same cost (and at times, greater cost) than much more powerful gaming platforms that both come with games.

Id have plenty of them(2 switches, 2 or 3 docks 8 controllers(joy-con +pro)), but the prices... aaaargh...
