Whats the stance these days on insulting people not on this website?

Depends on a number of factors:

Who it is
What the insult is

Why? Are you planning to insult someone? :P

Maybe he means that certain someone who is going around and calling people idiots and fat pieces of shit.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

We don't have an explicit rule against that. As always, though, it depends on the circumstances. That last part, however, sounds like that specifically is being highlighted as a problem and i know who/what you're talking about. He was given an opportunity to adjust some things. Hopefully, he uses it.

On the site, it would obviously be a problem (albeit: context, but still). If ever in considerable doubt, just don't post it, or bring it up in here.

And offsite? Like for example the kkk or scientology

Context will be even stronger, because unless it is an overuse of bad language (Substance), or a general insult about a group (Flaming), we're more lenient about it.

Why do you need limits? Why can't people just be respectful irrespective of outlet?

I think a year ago or more I got banned for calling Hajime Tabata a bad word because of my displeasure in the direction he took FFXV into. I'm just sayin.

Its quite simple actually what irl is accepted isnt allways accepted here.

Irl i would use circlejerk to describe a group of people egging eachother on and strenghtenen their beliefs. While it isnt meant in a way of disrepect at all. Its just shorter and much more to the point

More like nearly three years ago!

That said, the rules were a little different back then, so that probably wouldn't happen now (depending on how far you took it).
