I keep forgeting how heated this thread can get!

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

So, I'd like to announce a new feature that Moderators have recently acquired with the help/work of our Site Admin, TalonMan. We now have the ability to remove people from any thread (that is, should someone be enough of a troublemaker or cause havoc among users in a topic, they can be temporarily or permanently banned from said topic).

NOTE: *This does not mean people will be banned from threads for simple disagreements or occasional fighting*

The idea is to ensure someone that sticks out as a problem can be removed to allow for better flow of threads. Think of it as an absolute last resort. Sometimes, a poster may simply be removed from the topic without a moderation (ban) from the site.

I'm around for most of the day, so I'm happy to answer any questions you may have.

Nice! I dig it!

Does that also come with a tool to ban people from specific forums?

For example using a permabanned member, could a moderator theoretically ban ethomaz from all Nintendo discussion?

For now, it is thread specific. However, Forum Discussion bans are coming.

Are people notified in the same way as they are with regular moderations, or are they unaware of the thread ban until they try to access a discussion?

Does it go into a users mod history?

Sounds like a nice addition.

Will people who are banned from a thread still be able to view the thread or are they completely blocked from it?

Yes. They are notified about it through PM and it does go into their moderation history. They can still read the thread, but cannot post in it.

Sounds like a great addition to the toolset.

I urge you and the team to not use it on anyone in this thread, as that would be counter productive.

That is definitely a nice feature and will probably improve the overall ambiance in threads.

The idea is to ensure that a consistently problematic user can be removed to allow for better flow of threads. Think of it as an absolute last resort. Sometimes, they may simply be removed from the topic without a moderation (ban) from the site.

That sounds GREAT! Seriously!

Is Talon making a slow and steady return???

Does it carry over from an old thread to nee thread? Ex if i get banned in media create week 50 am i banned automatically in week 51?

That will ultimately boil down to the circumstances, user, and intention. For instance, someone banned from a thread/board isn't going to be given free reign to wreak havoc in here. But, we aren't going to just remove a user from here that's simply looking to understand/discuss under civilized conditions. That would create a dictatorship.

I was more concerned about permanently removing people from this thread. Moderators already have the authority to ask people not to post here, so a short term thread ban of a week or so wouldn't be a major concern.

Permanently silencing a specific users criticisms however is a major problem and it's something that really shouldn't be considered.
