Nope. We had magazines back then.

The porn is so much different these days, it wasn't that much of fantasy material as it is today, and the stories (they actually had background stories back then) were made more to resonate your actual life, as today it tries to be something that's not possible in real life.

And, the problem isn't jerking off, but creating expectations your partner can't meet. Female equivalent would be overly romantic partner created by reading Harlequin, or someone like you should have according to Cosmopolitan. Or, why not expecting your partner to have 35cm dick. If the requirement are not met, you're not getting turned on. This is the problem.

Speaking as a young Western male, the lack of sex I'm having has nothing to do with porn and everything to do with the inability to find a willing partner. Guess I could always blame Hollywood for giving women standards I can't meet. :P

Yeah, its likely that aversion/disinterest in sex is ingrained to the point where it would persist even without them being immersed in their native culture.

(I mean, obviously not all Japanese are anti-sex, I'm just talking in broad demographic strokes here)

Three years ago I was significantly overweight, I had to bust my arse to get to where I am now, I've lost 27kg since then.

In Japan this exodus from sex is so prevalent there's even a term for it: Sekkusu Shinai Shokogun, or "Celibacy Syndrome".

A lot of observers have even blamed dating sims, saying it draws young people away from the real thing.

Most likely this is caused by a number of things and not just one. However, the dating sim reminded me of one thing, which, based on observations on media and social media, it's getting more common for relationships being considered as games that you're supposed to win somehow.
