Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Activision's Amazing Spider-Man Games Make A Sharp Exit From The Wii U eShop

Theres probably a reason, but fuck me if I care...

Around the Network

The Activision/Marvel contract expired ages ago and around the time it expired they removed all licenced games from online stores. Surprised you could still even get it on there. The fact Deadpool even got a revamp was only due to the film else that would have stayed un-purchasable too.

Hmm, pie.

Probably has something to do with spiderman games becomeing a playstation thing.
I doubt other consoles will see another spiderman game in the near future.

So the game had already been off the other consoles eshop?^

Yes.

Licenses are also the reason why many old games never made it to Virtual Console. No active license means that a publisher can't sell a game, and when it comes to old games, renewing a license is often estimated to cost more than the money the game could bring in.

Of course, there are also cases where a license cannot be renewed because a certain publisher has purchased exclusive rights for selling video games based on the IP in question. I think this holds true for Spiderman, hence why the games were pulled from online stores. Physical copies that are still in stores are not affected by this, but the video game publisher who previously held the license is not allowed to print and distribute additional copies anymore.

Stupid question, why is it that Sony can still release the ps1 Crash/Spyro games on PSN when Activision owns the IP does Marvel control their IP differently?

Because Activision gave the okay.  From what I heard, Activision would not give Sony permission to release the same games on Vita, but were okay with allowing to console.

Sony owns the license to the PS1 crash games while Activision owns the Ip of crash bandicoot itself. The only way we were getting crash back how we remembered would have to have been through a business agreement from the two - Sony is allowed to remake their Ps1 games with a character that's owned by someone else, activision gets the best of crash bandicoot remastered/reworked without having to risk further damaging the IP in the form of a new game while collecting royalties. Spyro hasn't been talked about yet though. Please don't get my hopes up.
