Off the top of my head, a lot of Japanese bought a Wii for Monster Hunter Tri.

Go one step further, curl. Monster Hunter exclusivity for the 3DS essentially forced Sony out of the handheld market altogether.

That doesn't make any sense. Monster Hunter is primarily a japanese franchise and Japan is vita's best market. The reason vita is performing poorly is the western markets and Monster Hunter exclusivity wouldn't make any difference.

If Vita was successful in Japan, there would at least be a glimmer of hope that there might be another Sony handheld. The lack of Monster Hunter stifled its growth tremendously.

It was a heavy hit, yes. I do not believe it would've made a significant difference in the end though. The dedicated handheld market has massively shrunk in the recent years. And the 3ds simply had a much, much, much more appealing games on it. And as it stands there are very few people that would've bought a vita as a second console along with their 3ds.

Even the amount of units the 3DS has shifted has shrunk.
3DS: 62 Million vs DS 154 Million.

Gameboy Advance did 81.5 million, Gameboy 118  million.

So it's the worst selling mainstream Handheld for Nintendo to date.

The market has shrunk and shifted... I think the main reason Nintendo was able to retain success in the handheld market is due to cost and the fact they target their handhelds to younger audiences... But it can't be denied that Mobile has eaten into that, some kids would prefer a tablet over a Nintendo Handheld these days.

Compared it to GB is unfair..  It had a very long run.

Nothing unfair... PS3 were current gen longer than PS2 and yet sold almost 60% of the later. Duration of gen isn't the only important aspect, even more when peak is during 2nd or 3rd full year on the market.

Size or rather... Length isn't everything. ;)

Besides. If you removed the Gameboy, the trend is still clear. Dedicated mobile gaming is still in decline. Nintendo's devices have been in decline, Sony's devices have been in Decline whilst Phones and Tablets have exploded.

.... but most of those sales came from the last third of the gameboy's life. It sold somewhere around 60 million of that 118 million after FY97, 10 years after the gameboy came on the market. Pokemon is a hell of a system seller.

It does not matter how many GFLOPS the GPU can handle, the ARM CPU is simply too slow and provides a hughe bottleneck.
