I think Switch will run DS/3DS games ... just not the cartridges. Nintendo will want you to pay for them again on Virtual Console, and why not, it makes them more $$$.

If Nintendo were to release a 3DS successor that has games and architecture completely independent of the Switch, then it will have fixed none of the problems it had with the Wii U and 3DS, and will be releasing a console in three months that is needlessly gimped and underpowered.

In other words, the answer to your question is March 2017.

Can people stop calling the Switch the 3DS sucessor?

Can you fit the Switch inside a pocket ? No, therefore it's not an handheld, it's at best a tablet and more like an hybrid.

The 3DS will have a successor if a Switch mini release later.
