Final Fantasy Creator Hironobu Sakaguchi Picks Final Fantasy XV as His Game of the Year /// Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida Explains Why Final Fantasy XV Is His Game of The Year

Mistwalker President Hironobu Sakaguchi is known for many awesome JRPGs, but he is probably most famous as the creator of the Final Fantasy series, yet, as many fathers, he hasn’t always agreed with the direction taken by his child. Yet, it appears that that fracture has, at least in part, been healed. When asked by 4Gamer to pick his game of the year for 2016, Sakaguchi-san brought up Final Fantasy XV.

[...]

In this light, this year-end nod possibly appears less surprising, but I’d say that there can be no higher praise for a game, than that from the man who started it all.

On that same source, 4Gamer also asked Shuhei Yoshida for his Goty, on which he replied:

“Final Fantasy XV dropped the rules of the so-called JRPG, and I think it was successful in the bold attempt to redefine Final Fantasy on the same level with the current standard of RPG in the western industry with high action combat and open world.

The attitude “FF=Challenger” isn’t just about technology. I thought it was wonderful to share the situation of development by communicating directly with the users, and to convey the feeling of the world and the characters in advance with a movie and animation.

I think it’s a monumental achievement that will go down in the history of RPG, showing overseas game fan that the Japanese AAA gaming industry is also working hard"

You agree? Disagree? What do you think?

I'm surprised Shu didn't go for the token Sony answer and pick Uncharted 4, kudos for him!

I call it my most incomplete game of the year.

If I had to pick game of the year this year, I say ask again next year, because this year was meh.

I need to finish more games to say, still haven't finished ratchet and clank or uncharted 4 and i'm installing ff15 right now actually on ps4(it takes way too long holy shit...11 gb update on consoles? ugh).

Just finished the Last Guardian today that was a great game :)

If 2016 was "meh", then 2014 and 2015 were a nightmare.

For 2015 would be Fallout 4 for most incomplete game of the year and witcher 3 for game of the year for myself, but ya the last three years haven't been the most for something I feel deserves game of the year. 2014 was pretty meh for me as well (More so than this year).

Last time I thought of game really deserving that award was Last of Us (hell second place for me grand theft auto 5 also deserves it) and that was 2013 correct?

Also just to be clear, something I call my incomplete game of the year, means it should deserve game of the year, if it had more time/polish/felt more complete.

to be fair I can only recall this game as the only big blockbuster game that's multiplat released this year from japan.

2014 was pretty badass. It was the only year the Wii U had 100% support

12/22/2016- Made a bet with Ganoncrotch that the first 6 months of 2017 will be worse than 2016. A poll will be made to determine the winner. Loser has to take a picture of them imitating their profile picture.

2013 was pretty stacked. For GOTY you had The Last of Us, Bioshock Infinite, GTA5, Zelda Link Between Worlds, Super Mario 3D World.

Then you still had good games in general with BF4, Tomb Raider, Rayman Legends, Pokemon X/Y,  Tearaway, Dragons Crown and more.

Funnily enough I consider 2014 the worst by far. That was the year Shadow of Mordor and Dragon Age Inquisition were the main competitors for GOTY awards, which is pretty sad. Also Destiny crushed my soul. Though there were some good titles in there like Alien Isolation, Dark Souls 2, Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros

Totally agree with you, it really was such a disappointing year that year for me. I mean I could give this year more credit, because it did do so much better than that year.

Mario Kart 8 was bascailly the only thing that I think remotely felt best than previously before.
