Forums - Microsoft Discussion - I'm finally playing Gears 4, lets talk about it.

As some of you know, I got an Xbox One S a while back, and I've just gotten Gears 4 for Christmas. I'm a big fan of the origional trilogy, and so I've been really interested to see how the new game would go.

I'm about 2/3rds of the way through the campaign and needless to say, it's great! The gamplay is awesome, the level design is really good, the graphics are great (especially in HDR), the writting is funny as hell (though...I don't think it's on purpose). It's not perfect, of course. There's barely a story, as I said the writting is funny because it's soooo bad, and so far the scale of the campaign seems pretty limited. But as a type of violent, video game junkfood, it's a lot of fun.

Overall I think The Coalition has done a way better job with Gears than 343 did with Halo, and I'm excited for the rest of the new trilogy!

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

I disagree with you about the story aspect actually. I am a huge fan of the original trilogy, but in my opinion there stories were very very limited. I just started replaying the original trilogy and finished gears 2 yesterday, and the whole story mission is basically Marcus and friends going under ground and planting a bomb there, thats it.

Its different here though. You got to see more of the Outsiders, and more the true COG because they have always been portrayed as the good when they werent. You get to see the swarm as the new threat. Yes the writing sometimes could get a bit stupid I agree, but Old Marcus is amazing. Making Marcus even more badass and grumpy is just truly amazing to see.

I dont know if its my favorite game of the series or no, but it is definitely way better than Gears 1, and maybe a little bit better than 2, but not 3.

EDIT: Also the ending makes me super excited for Gears 5 more than the previous games did, so waiting for you to see that.

Yeah, it's true that all of the Gears games are fairly limited in their scope. But you really only spend enough time seeing the outsiders to shoot a bunch of robots and leave. Which is fine, Gears is all about the gameplay. And I agree that Marcus is great, but it's because he's wwwaaayyy over the top (like the whole series really).

Also, lets be real here, the COG has ALWAYS been the bad guy. Just like how the ISA are absolutely the bad guys in Killzone.

The chunky art style was ok on 360, but for some reason it comes off less appealing on Xbone. To me, it looks fake and plastic, akin to botox and breast implants. It makes me have no interest in playing it. It's on sale now. Might buy it, but I'm not excited.

It is a little weird at times. They look almost like the bad guy from Small Soldiers...but It still looks like Gears.

Hang on. Let's not confuse world building and story.

The original trilogy may have had simple story lines 'men on a mission' of you will a la Expendables or Magnificent Seven, but the world building in the sequels were fantastic. Some of the best gaming has seen in fact, from its memorable characters to, its overall lore and even weapons.

Gears 4 may focus more on the story, but the quality just isn't there, not in the writing, characters or even world building. The first game may just be going underground to plant a bomb, but everything around that is fantastic. The pacing, dialogue, atmosphere practically everything.

In comparison the underground sections in Gears 4 (wwhich spend two dire chapters where as the first game was only for one chapter) is tedious, overlong and void of any surprises.

The campaign isn't awful, but it's severely behind the original trilogy in terms of quality.

Yea I want to play this. I've always enjoyed the campaign on these games. I'm hoping they move the game to Steam I can wait a while to see if it happens. If not I'll eventually get it but I'll just wait until it drops to like ten dollars or something like that.

Gears of war 4's campaign comes off like a lot of great ideas wasted. The beginning of the game is sooo boring yet all the interesting themes and concepts are in the beginning of the game, and ironically as the game becomes more fun the story becomes less interesting.

Terrible game honestly. Not as bad as Judgement but hope 5 is better.

I disagree, the camapaign reminded me of Gears 1 and thoroughly enjoyed the multiple playthroughs ive done with friends. Gears is Gears, you don't go in expecting the most delicate of story or subtle character developments but what it goes out to do it does well. Have you tried horde? That mode is insanely fun, that and versus has been taking up my time. What's your Gamertag? Will run some Horde mode if you want.

To me, the whole narrative of Gears 4 seems entirely pointless, and it showed through the campaign. There were barely any exciting or interesting things to see/do. I don't know, the atmosphere didn't feel as impressive as in the original trilogy.

However, the multiplayer is fantastic as always, I just can't get enough of it even seven years after I originally played Gears 2.

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.
