Forums - Sony Discussion - Could a rebranded vita be successful?

As of now the Vita has basically cemented itself as a niche system especially in the west but could it be possible for Sony to basically start from scratch and give the system a 2nd major push even with competition from mobile, the 3ds and switch? I feel like there are a handful of issues that are really holding the system back.

1st of all the hardware is flawed. Power wise it's fine but it needs triggers, R3 & L3 and the memory cards need no further explanation. I feel like a major hardware revision that fixes those 3 issues would be the first step towards revitalizing the system.

The 2nd major issue is software. Sony basically abandoned the system after 2013, it has seen a consistent flow of releases but outside of the niche jrpg market there isn't much to play besides indies. It needs a consistent release schedule with both new and returning IP from both Sony and 3rd parties. Sony needs to bite the bullet and push for a Vita GTA and metal gear, Bioshock, elder scrolls, infamous, god of war, crash, persona ect.

If some how by the power of divine intervention these 2 things happen I could see the Vita carving out a much better niche for itself. The 3ds is on its way out it definitely won't be around for another year so the Vita could move in and take its place as the cheapest system on the market if Sony is willing to support, give it a good price cut and fix it's flaws. I could honestly see a SD card compatible $150 Vita bundled with that cancelled golden abyss sequel doing quite well even against the switch.

I can't see it. Most of it's games are available on other platforms. A combo of say Switch + ps4/PC would give you a wider range of games to play than say Vita + ps4/PC. I am not saying that to bash the system cause the games on it is nice for its target audience but what the handheld needs is exclusives that really sell the system like MH, Pokemon and etc.

Plus everyone will remember how Sony treated the vita and will probably get the Switch anyway. Sony would not only need to secure exclusives that sell the system but also bring back consumer confidence which is the hardest thing to do.

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

Unless they can produce a handheld that's close in power to the PS4 and market it aggressively I don't see it being successful. That said, if Sony wants to make a handheld successful they definitely have the power to do it.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

The reason why the vita, psp, and whatever dedicated mobile hardware lost was because the juggernaut that is the nintendo dedicated mobile line of hardware. If it wasn't Nintendo, it wasn't going to work. It's the same reason why Nintendo can't seem to sell their home consoles. There is a stigma that helps and hurts nintendo. Their handheld is great because of the catalog of great games that came before. Games that can exist as either handheld or console. Handheld nintendo is the reverse sony console. Where the handheld is for everyone, their home consoles is for a niche. Where sony's home console is for everyone, the Vita is the niche.

I think a lot of people were turned off by the name "Vita"
It is too weird sounding a name for a gaming system in most languages.

No. The library doesn't have mass appeal and the Sony's support hasn't been great.

If anything, I think a rebranded Vita with increased capabilities could sell better than the current Vita. But Sony clearly doesn't care about the mobile market anymore, they're just gonna make phone games.

It could have been called Dick Grabber and with Nintendo as a backer it would have sold.  What is in a name?  It was Nintendo's resources, Nintendo's games, Nintendo's history, Nintendo's overall ability to push mobile game that got the GB, GBA, DS, 3DS into millions upon millions of hands.  Handheld Nintendo consoles sold because Nintendo.  Just like how PS home consoles sell because it's PS with a Number attached to it.  Vita was a market that wasn't a Handheld market.  The demographics for a sony handheld couldn't give a darn about underpowered console games on the go.  It wasn't that Vita marketing was bad, either, it was bad because they had nothing good to market.  Sure the Vita had hits, but when there's no one wanting to play any of the games, there's no real success.  I mean, how many people are aware of games on the Vita like people are aware of games on the 3ds?  Pokemon, Mario, animal crossing, Layton, Fire emblem, Mario Kart, Ace attorney, Donkey Kong.  Those games are off the top of my head and most of them aren't games that first came out during current generation.  From the PSP, what games does one look forward to on the Vita?

Even though it managed to beat the Wii U...... it doesnt have the same future as it is.

If Sony wants to, they can have the PS5 like the Switch (if it is successful)

Pocky Lover Boy!

No way, the concept was DOA, regardless of name and primary focus.

Nope. The Vita simply isn't something people would buy. I got turned off by the price tag of the memory cards for one, and I'm sure others have as well.
