Forums - Movies & TV - AVGN Movie Post Mortem: What went wrong?

AVGN Movie.

Terrible movie. 14 82.35%

Great movie. 3 17.65%

Total:17

I thought the movie was alright. Certainly no Hollywood quality and it fails at its core to be a bigger AVGN episode, but I still found a few redeeming scenes.
I liked the Cooper character, loved the store scene where AVGN works, the self built UFO part, the E.T. puppet scenes and the E.T. review.

Overall certainly disappointing but not a waste of time either.

I also agree with Snoorlax on the recent episodes. They aren't nearly as funny as the older ones.
Where are all the cool cameos? Mike was awesome as the Joker, the Lion from Oz and Bugs Bunny, Kyle great as Spiderman or the Guitar Guy in the Ikari Warriors episode, Bootsy is brilliant in the Board James episodes. (Also Pat in Nintendo World Champion)
Most of his reactions nowadays are bad/not funny. It's always the same now. You see some footage of something weird happening, then it cuts to his face, he says "what?" or "what just happened?" then more footage of the same happening again, then cut back and he explains what happened on screen even when we already knew that and then he shakes his head and continues playing. Repeat. (Just watch Hong Kong 97 or Big Rigs)

The movie was pretty much what I expected it to be. My biggest problem with it was that it wasn't as funny as his AVGN videos. My conclusion is it was the first time he ever made a full length feature film and he based it off the AVGN series which is meant to nothing more than 10 minute shorts. It's hard to make a movie from something like that. I think James' next movie shouldn't be about the AVGN at all. That being said, I really like what he did with Board James. That was a show that started out almost like an AVGN clone and didn't really go anywhere at first, but then he turned it into it's own thing.

My main issue is that during and post movie AVGN episodes haven't been that good. Personally I think he's tired of the character. It has nothing to do with his acting abilities since his Board James series' was amazing even after the movie. But his AVGN character doesn't have a lot of energy anymore and I don't think he's excited making them anymore, they feel mellow and half-hearted

I personally never expect anything good from James Rolfe, so I guess he delivered.

Was it better or worse than Space Cop?

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

- George Orwell, ‘1984’

Space Cop was also terrible, I must say. I dunno which one is the worst.

I agree, too much wasted energy for nothing. He could have done a much better movie without leaving his city, making a ET, a godzille robot or a armless wheelchair general. It was too much effort for absolutelly no pay-off.
